26. Imbecillem adjuvare velle, charitatis; potentem, elationis est. — Adjuvare imbecillem, charitatis est; adjuvare potentem velle, elationis. Quia igitur amici ejus hæreticorum speciem tenentes, quasi adjuvantes Deum, sapientiam suam ostendere conabantur, juste Baldad reprehenditur, ut dicatur: Cujus adjutor es? nunquid imbecillis? et sustentas brachium ejus, qui non est fortis? Ac si aperte dicat: Dum eum juvare niteris, sub cujus magnitudine succumbis, omne quod impendis solatium, de ostentatione est, non de pietate. 27. Quo sensu Deum adjuvare dicimur. - Sed inter hæc sciendum est, quod plerumque etiam Deum, qui videlicet imbecillis non est, humiliter agentes adjuvamus.

26. To wish to help the weak is of charity; the powerful, of pride.—To help the weak is of charity; to wish to help the powerful, of pride. Since therefore his friends, keeping the appearance of heretics, as if aiding God, were trying to display their own wisdom, Bildad is justly reproved, so that it is said: 'Whose helper are you? Is it not the weak? and do you sustain the arm of him who is not strong?' As if he plainly said: While you strive to help him under whose greatness you succumb, all the comfort you offer is of ostentation, not of piety. 27. In what sense we are said to help God.—But amid these things it is to be known that very often we help even God—who indeed is not weak—by acting humbly.

Nam cum ei quem ipse per internam graliam infundit nos exhortationis voce concurrimus, hoc quod ille per spiritum agit intrinsecus nos exterius ministerio vobis adjuvamus, et tunc solum nostra exhortario ad perfectionem ducitur, cum in corde Deus fuerit qui adjuvetur. Unde et alias dicit: Neque qui plantat est aliquid, neque qu rigat, sed qui incrementum dat Deus (I bid., 7). pantare quippe et rigare, adjuvare est. Quod utraique vacuum erit ministerium, si in corde Deu non dat incrementum.
故此藉保羅也說：「因為我們是神的同工」（哥林多前書三章9節）。因為當我們藉勸勉的言語，與那由神親自藉內在恩典所澆灌的人同工時，我們就從外面藉自己的服事，幫助神在裡面藉聖靈所作的工；惟有當那受幫助者心中有神時，我們的勸勉才被引到完全。故此他在別處也說：「栽種的算不得甚麼，澆灌的也算不得甚麼，惟有叫他生長的神」（同上，7節）。因為栽種和澆灌就是幫助。這兩樣的服事若神不在心中賜下生長，便都是徒然的。
Whence also it is said through Paul: 'For we are God's helpers' (1 Cor. III, 9). For when we concur by the voice of exhortation with him whom he himself infuses by inward grace, we from without help by our ministry that which he works within by the Spirit; and then only is our exhortation led to perfection, when God is in the heart who is helped. Whence also elsewhere he says: 'Neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase' (Ibid., 7). For to plant and to water is to help. Which ministry will both be empty, if God does not give the increase in the heart.

Unde et Veritatis voce discipulis dicitur: Cum feceritis omnia quas præcepta sunt vobis, dicite: Servi inutiles sumus, quod debuimul facere fecimus(Luc. XVII, 10). Sequitur:
