959:1
20. Hæretici non medullam Scripturas sacræ comedunt, sed corticem redunt. — Rodi solet quod comedi non potest. Hæretici autem quia Scripturam sacram intelligere sua virtute moliuntur, eam procul dubio apprehendere nequaquam possunt; a quam dum non intelligunt, quasi non edunt. Et quia per supernam gratiam non adjuti hanc comedere nequeunt, quasi quibusdam illam nisibus rodunt. Exterius quippe illam contrectant, b cum quidem conamur, sed non ad ejas interiora perveniunt. Qui quia ab universalis Erclesiæ societate disjuncti sunt, non quolibet rodere, sed in solitudine memorantur. Ad quam nimirum solitudinem, quia prædicatores falsi sequaces Mos traherent, louge ante Veritas præmonuit, diCeDi:
二十、異端不吃聖經的精髓，只啃咬其外皮。——凡不能吃的，通常就被啃咬。異端既竭力憑自己的能力去領悟聖經，便無疑絕不能把握住它；當他們不領悟它時，就彷彿沒有吃它。又因為他們沒有蒙上頭的恩典幫助，不能吃它，就彷彿用某些努力去啃咬它。因為他們在外面觸摸它，雖然嘗試，卻不能達到它的內裡。他們既與大公教會的團契隔絕，經上記載他們啃咬，並非在任何地方，而是在曠野。真理早已預先警戒，免得假傳道者將其跟隨者拖入這曠野，說：
20. Heretics do not eat the marrow of Holy Scripture, but gnaw the bark. — What cannot be eaten is wont to be gnawed. But because heretics endeavor to understand Holy Scripture by their own strength, without doubt they can by no means lay hold of it; and while they do not understand it, they as it were do not eat it. And because, not being helped by supernal grace, they cannot eat it, they as it were gnaw it with certain efforts. For they handle it outwardly, since indeed they try, but do not reach to its inner parts. Because they are separated from the society of the Universal Church, they are recorded to gnaw, not anywhere, but in solitude. To which solitude, because false preachers would drag their followers, the Truth long before forewarned, saying:

Si dixerint vobis: Ecce in deserto est, nolite exire (Matth. XXIV, 26). Qui recte perhibentur calamitate et miserja squalidi, quia et morum sunt pernicie, et sensuum pravitate despecti. Qui herbas quoque et arborum cortices mandunt, quia clationis suae obice repulsi, in sacro eloquio magna et intima percipere nequeunt, sed vix in illo quædam tenera et exteriera cognoscunt. Per herbas quippe dicta planiora, perarborum cortices Patrum eloquia exteriora signantur.
『若有人對你們說：看哪，基督在曠野裡，你們不要出去』（太二十四26）。這些人恰當地被描寫為因災禍與困苦而污穢襤褸，因為他們既因品行的敗壞、又因感官的墮落而被藐視。他們也吃野草和樹皮，因為被自己自負的屏障所擋回，他們不能在聖言中領受偉大而深邃的事，卻僅能在其中認識某些嫩弱而外表的事。因為野草表明較淺白的話語，樹皮表明教父們外表的言語。
'If they say to you: Behold, he is in the desert, do not go out' (Matt. 24:26). Who are rightly represented as squalid with calamity and misery, because they are despised both for the ruin of their morals and for the depravity of their senses. Who also eat herbs and the bark of trees, because, thrust back by the barrier of their own elation, they cannot perceive great and inward things in the sacred discourse, but scarcely know in it certain tender and outward things. For by herbs are signified the plainer sayings, and by the bark of trees the outward words of the Fathers.
959:3
Qui ergo ea scire appetunt es quibus docti nequaquam sint, sed esse videantur, dum in sacris voluminibus vim charitatis erga Deum ac proximum medullilus non exquirunt, quasi ex hcrba et coriice pascuntur, quia vel ima, 646 vel exteriora sunt, quæ mentes superbientium nutriint. Vel certe berbas mandere est de Scriptura sacra minima præcepta servare, nlajora contemnere. Quos hcne Veritas increpat, dicens: Væ vobis, Scr bæ et Pharisæi hypocritæ, qui decimatis mentam, et anethum, c et cuminum, et reliquistis quæ graviora sunt legis (Matth. XXIII, 23).
所以，那些渴望知道那使自己絕不會有學問、只是看似有學問的事的人，當他們在聖卷中不去探究到骨髓那對神和對鄰舍之愛的力量時，就彷彿以野草和樹皮為食，因為那滋養驕傲人心思的，或是最低微的、或是外表的事。或者說，吃野草就是遵守聖經中最小的誡命，而藐視較大的。真理將他們大大責備，說：『你們這假冒為善的文士和法利賽人有禍了！因為你們將薄荷、蒔蘿、芹菜獻上十分之一，那律法上更重的事反倒不行了』（太二十三23）。
They therefore who desire to know those things by which they are by no means learned but only seem to be, while in the sacred volumes they do not search out to the marrow the force of charity toward God and neighbor, are as it were fed on herb and bark, because they are either the lowest or the outward things which nourish the minds of the proud. Or certainly to eat herbs is to observe the least precepts from Holy Scripture, and to despise the greater. Whom the Truth well rebukes, saying: 'Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, who tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have left the weightier matters of the law' (Matt. 23:23).
959:4
Qui arborum quoque cortices mandunt, quia sunt nonnulli qui in sacris voluminibus solain litteræ superliciem venerantur, nec quidquam de spiritali intellectu custodiunt, cu:n nhil in verbis Dei amplius nisi hoc quod exterius audierint esse suspiecantur Quos tamen in cunctis erroribus suis inanis gloriae appetitus possidet, eosque honoris amI itus captivos tenet, et plerumque per ipsa quæ loquuntur nihil aliud quam terrena lucra appetunt. De quibus per Paulum dicitur: Hujusmodi enim Christo Domino non serviunt, sed suo ventri (Rom. xvi, 18). Unde recte quoque subjungitur:
還有那些吃樹皮的人，因為有些人在聖卷中只敬重字句的表面，全不持守屬靈的悟性，因為他們臆測神的言語中除了外面所聽見的以外，別無他物。然而在他們一切的錯謬中，虛榮的貪慾佔據著他們，尊榮的野心擄掠著他們，且常常藉他們所說的話，他們所尋求的無非是地上的利益。論到他們，藉保羅說：『這樣的人不服事我們的主基督，只服事自己的肚腹』（羅十六18）。因此也正確地接著說：
They also who eat the bark of trees, because there are some who in the sacred volumes venerate only the surface of the letter, and keep nothing of the spiritual understanding, since they suspect there is nothing more in the words of God than this which they have heard outwardly. Whom nevertheless, in all their errors, the appetite of vainglory possesses, and the ambition of honor holds captive, and oftentimes through the very things they speak they seek nothing else than earthly gains. Concerning whom it is said through Paul: 'For such serve not Christ the Lord, but their own belly' (Rom. 16:18). Hence rightly also there is added:
