512:1
V ers. 3.
Verse 3: 'But nevertheless I will speak to the Almighty, and I desire to dispute with God.' 33. He who is now familiar with God in prayer will afterward judge together with Him. — We speak with the Almighty when we entreat His mercy; but we dispute with Him when, joining ourselves to His justice, we discuss our own deeds with subtle scrutiny. Or certainly, to dispute with God is that he who here has obeyed His precepts should afterward come with Him as judge to judge the peoples, as it is said to those who forsake all things: 'You who have followed me, in the regeneration, when the Son of man shall sit on the seat of His majesty, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel' (Matt. 19:28).
512:2
Whence also through Isaiah the Lord says: 'Rescue him that suffers wrong, judge for the fatherless, and justify the widow; and come, let us dispute' (Isa. 1:17). For it is right that those who for the words of God perfectly forsake the present world should dispute with God in judgement concerning the fatherless. To speak, therefore, pertains to prayer; to dispute, to judgement. The holy man, then, now speaks to the Almighty, that he may afterward dispute with the Almighty, because he comes afterward as judge with God, who here now is familiar with Him in prayer. But holy Church, whose likeness we have already often said blessed Job bears (especially in the preface, chapters 6 and following
