50:1
19. Superbus, licet recte sentiens, increpandus. Qua ratione non indiget sacrificio.—Per Heliu autem, qui rectis quidem sensibus loquitur, sed ad stulta elatio- nis verba derivatur, persona uniuscujusque arrogan- tis exprimitur. Multi namque intra sanctam Ecclesiam positi, recta quae sapiunt recte proferre contemnunt. Unde et divinae increpationis verbis arguitur, nec ta- men pro illo sacrificium offertur; quia fidelis quidem est, sed tamen arrogans: per veritatem credulitatis intus est, sed per tumoris sui obstaculum acceptabilis non est. Hinc ergo increpatio redarguit, sed sacrifi- cium non reducit;
十九、驕傲之人縱使存念正確,仍當受責。他為何不需祭物。——但藉以利戶——他固然存正確的意念說話,卻被引向自高愚妄的言語——表明每一個自負之人的位分。因為許多置身聖教會之內的人,輕看去正確地說出他們所領悟的正確之事。故此他也被神責備的言語所斥責,然而卻沒有為他獻祭;因為他固然是信徒,卻依然是自負的:藉他信念的真實,他在裡面;但藉他自高的阻礙,他卻不蒙悅納。所以在此,責備斥責他,祭物卻不使他歸回;
19. The proud man, though rightly minded, must be rebuked. On what account he needs no sacrifice. — But by Elihu, who indeed speaks with right sentiments, but is diverted to the foolish words of elation, the person of every arrogant man is expressed. For many, placed within the holy Church, disdain to utter rightly the right things which they perceive. Whence he is also reproved by the words of divine rebuke, yet nonetheless no sacrifice is offered for him; because he is indeed faithful, but nevertheless arrogant: by the truth of his belief he is within, but by the obstacle of his swelling he is not acceptable. Here, therefore, rebuke censures him, but sacrifice does not bring him back;
50:2
because he is indeed in that faith in which he ought to be, but heavenly justice, rebuking him, rejects him for superfluous things. Whence Elihu too is well said in the Latin tongue 'This is my God,' or 'God the Lord.' For arrogant men within the holy Church, although by living haughtily they flee from God, nonetheless by truly believing they confess Him. For what is it to say by name, 'This is my God,' but to show by open profession Him in whom one has believed? or what is it to say 'God the Lord,' but both to believe Him God through His divinity, and to declare Him Lord from His incarnation?
