72. Electorum, Ecclesiæque dolor, eliam tempore I pacis, a suis persecutionem tolerantium. — Fidelis enim populus exspectat bona, sed mala suscipil; præstolatur locem, et tenebras incurrit, quia per remunerationis gratiam interesse jamjamque anlelorum se gaudiis sperat, etitamen hic diutius dilatus, manus persequentium tolerat; et qui se quantocius æslimat æternæ lucis retributione perfrui, hic adhuc compellitur persecutorum suorum tenebras pati. Quae videlicet mala persequentium minus dolerent, si ab infidelibus adversariisque consurgerent. Sed eo deterius mentem electorum cruciant, quo ab illis veniunt, de quibus bona praesumebant. Unde adhuc subditur:
七十二、蒙揀選者與教會的憂傷，甚至在平安之時，因忍受來自自己人的逼迫。——因為信實之民等候美善，卻遭遇患難；盼望光明，卻陷入黑暗；因為藉著報償的恩典，它盼望此刻終於得以在眾天使的喜樂中同在，然而它在此被延遲愈久，就愈忍受逼迫者的手；那以為自己將要儘快享受永恆之光報償的人，在此仍被迫忍受逼迫者的黑暗。逼迫者的這些患難，若是出自不信者和仇敵，本會較少令人憂傷。但它們愈是出自那些原被指望有美善的人，就愈厲害地折磨蒙揀選者的心。因此又進一步加上說：
72. The grief of the elect and of the Church, even in the time of peace, at enduring persecution from her own. — For the faithful people awaits good things, but receives evil; it looks for light, and runs into darkness; because through the grace of recompense it hopes now at last to be present among the joys of the angels, and yet, here deferred the longer, it endures the hands of the persecutors; and he who esteems that as soon as possible he shall enjoy the recompense of eternal light, is here still compelled to suffer the darkness of his persecutors. Which evils of the persecutors would grieve less, if they arose from the unfaithful and from adversaries. But they torment the mind of the elect the worse in proportion as they come from those of whom they had presumed good things. Whence it is still further added:

Sanctae quippe Ecclesie interiora a effervescere ett ipsos quoque quos per amorem fidei velut viscera Mote gestaverat in persecutionis atrocitate tolerare. Qui seereta prius illius cognoscentes, quanto sciunt ubi magis doleat, tanto deterius ab afflictione ejns minime quiescunt. Quos tamen et pacis suae tempore graviter tolerat, quia suis prædicationibus eorum mores contrarios pensat. Gemit enim, cum eorum vitam sibi dissimilem conspicit. De quibus et apte subjungitur: [Vet. XXVIII.] Scit namque sancta electorum Eeclesia quod persecutione ultima, mala multa passura sit; sed hanc afflictionis suae dies praeveniunt, quia malorum vitam intra se graviier etiam tempore pacis portat.

For the inward parts of holy Church boil over, and she must endure, in the atrocity of persecution, those very ones whom she had borne as it were as her own bowels through the love of faith. Who, having first known her secrets, inasmuch as they know where she grieves the more, so much the worse do they not rest from afflicting her. Whom nevertheless even in the time of her peace she grievously endures, because she weighs their ways as contrary to her preachings. For she groans when she beholds their life unlike her own. Of whom it is aptly subjoined: [Old Version XXVIII.] For the holy Church of the elect knows that in the last persecution it will suffer many evils; but the days of its affliction come before, because it bears within itself the life of the wicked grievously even in the time of peace.

Nam quamvis diebus ultimis aperta infidelium persecutio sequatur, hanc tamen et priusquam appareat, hi qui in ea verbo tenus fldeles sunt, pravis moribus antecurrunt. Sequitur:
