299:1
V ers. 23.— Sed cum lapidibus regionum pactum tuum. 50. Pie viventibus cavenda singularitas. Quasi distinctae in mundo regiones sunt Ecclesiae gentium, quae in una fide positae, morum linguarumque diver- sitate dividuntur. Quid ergo regionum lapides, nisi Ec- clesiarum electos accipimus? quibus primi instructoris voce dicitur: Vosautem tanquamlapides vivi superaedi- ficamini ( I Petr. ii, 5 ).
Verse 23. — 'But thy covenant shall be with the stones of the regions.' 50. Singularity is to be guarded against by those living devoutly. As it were distinct regions in the world are the Churches of the nations, which, set in one faith, are divided by the diversity of manners and tongues. What then do we take the stones of the regions to be, but the elect of the Churches? to whom it is said by the voice of their first instructor: 'And you as living stones are built up' (1 Pet. 2:5). Concerning whom the Lord promises to the holy Church through the prophet, saying: 'Behold I will lay thy stones in order' (Isa. 54:11).
299:2
Qui igitur recte vivit, pacto se lapidibus 204 re- gionum jungit, quia in eo quod mundi desideria su- perat, vitam suam procul dubio ad sanctorum prae- cedentium imitationem ligat. Sed cum a mundi a ac- tione disjungitur, malignorum spirituum impugna- tiones crescunt: quae tamen quo magis in moerore quemquam atterunt, eo conditori humilius subdunt. Unde et subjungitur:
He therefore who lives rightly joins himself by covenant to the stones of the regions, because in that he overcomes the desires of the world, he binds his own life without doubt to the imitation of the saints who have gone before. But when he is severed from the action of the world, the assaults of the malign spirits increase: which nevertheless, the more they wear a man down in sorrow, the more humbly do they subject him to his Creator. Whence also it is subjoined:
