V ers. 16. — b Perfodiunt in tenebris domos, sicut in die condixerant sibi, et ignoraverunt lucem. 76. Haeretici in adversitatis nocte justorum con- scientiam perfodere tentant. — Quid namque hoc loco domorum nomine nisi conscientiae designantur, in quibus habitamus cum tractando quid agimus? Unde cuidam sanato dicitur: Vade in domum tuam ad tuos, et annuntia illis quanta tibi Dominus fecerit ( Luc. viii, 39), id est, a peccati jam vitio securus ad con- scientiam revertere, et in vocem praedicationis exci- tare. Justi itaque cum in praesenti saeculo c die prospe- ritatis clarescunt, eis errorum magistri perversa suadere metuunt.

Verse 16. — They dig through houses in the darkness, as they had agreed among themselves in the day, and they knew not the light. 76. Heretics in the night of adversity try to dig through the conscience of the just. — For what in this place is designated by the name of houses, but the consciences in which we dwell when by deliberating we consider what we do? Whence it is said to a certain man who had been healed: Go into thy house to thine own, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee (Luke viii, 39), that is, being now secure from the fault of sin, return to thy conscience, and rouse thyself unto the voice of preaching. And so, when the just shine forth in the present world in the day of prosperity, the masters of errors fear to persuade them to perverse things.

Sed consilia exquirunt, dejectio- nem prosperitatis eorum summopere praestolantur, ut in adversitatis tenebris eorum mentes suadendo perfodiant, quibus prospere viventibus perversa lo- qui minime audebant. Quos mox ut in adversitate viderint, exsurgunt, et non nisi ex peccati merito talia illos perpeti asserunt, quia solam praesentis vitae gloriam diligentes, flagellum damnationem credunt. In tenebris ergo domos perfodiunt, quia bonorum mentes ex ipsa eorum corrumpere adversitate mo- liuntur. Bene autem dicitur: Sicut in die condixerant (??)ibi, quia cum justos conspicerent 530 prosperitatis luce claruisse, quoniam loqui non poterant, ad ma- ligna solummodo contra eos consilia vacabant.

But they seek out counsels, they most earnestly await the casting-down of their prosperity, that in the darkness of adversity they may by persuasion dig through the minds of those to whom, while they lived prosperously, they by no means dared to speak perverse things. Whom, as soon as they see them in adversity, they rise up, and assert that they suffer such things only from the desert of sin, because, loving the glory of the present life alone, they believe the scourge to be a condemnation. In the darkness, therefore, they dig through houses, because they strive to corrupt the minds of the good out of their very adversity. And it is well said: As they had agreed among themselves in the day, because when they beheld the just to have shone in the light of prosperity, since they could not speak, they only had leisure for malignant counsels against them.

[ Vet. XXIX.] Sive autem haeretici, sive perversi quilibet, cum justos in dejectione conspiciunt, gaudent; cum vero eos ad regendae potestatis viderint culmen erumpere, perturbantur, metuunt, afflictionibus ta- bescunt. Unde et subditur:

Now whether heretics, or any perverse men whatever, when they behold the just in dejection, they rejoice; but when they see them break forth to the summit of ruling power, they are troubled, they fear, they waste away with afflictions. Whence it is also subjoined:
