I bid. - Aestuabit, et omnis dolor irruet in eum. 27. In acquirendis et custodiendis divitiis anxietas aeternis suppliciis proeludil. -Prius namque dolorem habuit in ipsa suae concupiscentiae fatigatione, qua- liter concupita raperet, quomodo alia blandimentis, alia terroribus auferret; at postquam acquisitis re- bus pervenit ad desiderium, alius hunc dolor fatigat, ut cum sollicito timore custodiat quod cum gravi labore meminit acquisitum. Hinc inde insidiatores metuit, atque se hoc perpeti quod ipse fecit aliis per- timescit. a Formidat potentiorem alterum, ne hunc sustineat violentum; pauperem vero cum conspicit, suspicatur furem.

Ibid.—He shall burn, and all sorrow shall rush upon him. 27. In acquiring and guarding riches, anxiety is a prelude to eternal torments.—For first he had sorrow in the very weariness of his own concupiscence, how he might snatch the things he coveted, how he might take away some by flatteries, others by terrors; but after, when the goods were acquired, he came to his desire, another sorrow wearies him, so that with anxious fear he may guard what he remembers to have acquired with heavy labor. On this side and that he dreads plotters, and fears greatly to suffer himself the very thing that he did to others. He is afraid of another more powerful, lest he endure him as a doer of violence; and when he beholds a poor man, he suspects a thief.

Ipsa quoque quae congesta sunt curat magnopere, ne ex naturae; propriae defectu 480 per negligentiam consumantur. In his itaque omnibus b quia timor ipse poena est, tanta infelix pa- titur, quanta pati timet. Post hoc quoque ad gehen- nam ducitur, et aeternis cruciatibus mancipatur. Om- nis ergo dolor super eum irruit, quem et hic prius poena concupiscentiae, postmodum vero cura custo- diae et illic quandoque poena ultionis cremat. [ Vet. XII.] 28, Mira cordis, avaritiae non expositis securitas. —Mira autem est securitas cordis, aliena non quaerere, c sed uniuscujusque diei victu conten- tum manere.

He also greatly takes care of the very things that have been heaped up, lest through the failure of their own nature they be consumed by neglect. In all these things, therefore, because the fear itself is a punishment, the unhappy man suffers as much as he fears to suffer. After this too he is led to hell, and delivered over to eternal torments. All sorrow therefore rushes upon him, whom here first the punishment of concupiscence, and afterward the care of keeping, and there at length the punishment of retribution burns. [Old Div. XII.] 28. Wonderful is the security of a heart not laid open to avarice.—But wonderful is the security of the heart, not to seek the things of others, but to remain content with each day's sustenance.

Ex qua videlicet securitate etiam peren- nis requies nascitur, quia a bona et tranquilla cogi- tatione ad gaudia aeterna transitur. Quo contra re- probi et hic fatigantur in desideriis, et illic in tor- mentis; eisque de labore cogitationis labor doloris nascitur, dum ab aestu avaritiae trahuntur ad ignem gehennae. Et quia, ut supra jam diximus, saepe per- versus quisque quanto citius pervenit ad desiderium, tanto facilius rapitur ad tormentum, optando subjun- gitur:

From which security, namely, everlasting rest also is born, because from a good and tranquil thought there is a passing over to eternal joys. Contrariwise, the reprobate are both here wearied in their desires and there in torments; and out of the labor of thought is born for them the labor of sorrow, while from the heat of avarice they are dragged to the fire of hell. And because, as we have already said above, often the more speedily each perverse man comes to his desire, the more easily is he snatched to torment, by way of wishing it is subjoined:
