I bid.— Nec e revertetur oculus meus ut videat bona. 29. Post mortem non est locus promerendae veniae,— Ad videnda bona exstincti oculus non redit, quia ad exhibenda recta opera exuta carne anima non recur- rit. Hinc est quod dives quem inferni flamma crucia- bat, quia semetipsum reparare operando non posset agnoverat; nam nequaquam sibi, sed relictis fratri- bus prodesse satagebat, dicens: Rogo te, paler Abra- ham, ut mittas eum in domum patris mei, habeo enim quinque fratres', ut testetur illis, ne et ipsi veniant in locum hunc tormentorum ( Luc. xvi, 27). After death there is no place for earning pardon. — The eye of the dead does not return to behold good things, because the soul, stripped of the flesh, does not run back to perform righteous works. Hence it is that the rich man whom the flame of hell was tormenting, because he had recognized that he could not restore himself by working, took no pains for himself but only for his surviving brothers, saying: 'I beg you, father Abraham, to send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they too come into this place of torments' (Luke 16:27). For hope, even false hope, is wont to comfort a grieving soul. But that the reprobate may feel their punishment the more grievously, they lose even the hope of pardon.

Unde, flammis ultricibus traditus, non sibi, ut diximus, sed opitulari fratribus concupivit, quia nunquam se ignium carere tormentis, adjuncto desperationis supplicio, agnovit. Hinc Salomon ait: Quodcunque potest manus tua facere, instanter ope- rare, quia nec opus, nec ratio, nec scientia, nec sapien- tia erunt apud inferos, quo tu properas ( Eccle. ix, 10). Nequaquam ergo ad videnda bona oculus revertetur, quia retributionem suam mens inveniens, ad opera- tionis usum nullatenus revocatur. Quia igitur fugit omne quod cernitur, et mansura sunt quae sequuntur, bene beatus Job uno versu utraque complexus est, dicens:

By no means, therefore, shall the eye return to see good things, because the mind, finding its retribution, is in no way recalled to the exercise of working. Since, then, everything that is seen flees away, and the things that follow abide, blessed Job well embraced both in a single verse, saying:
