V ers. 12.— Cumque elevassent procul oculos suos, non agnoverunt eum. 67. Afflictio fugat vitia.—Afflictos enim nos vitia minime cognoscunt, quia triste cor mox ut pulsave- rint, reprobata resiliunt; et quae nos laetos quasi no- verant, quia penetrabant, moerentes cognoscere nequeunt, quia ipso nostro rigore franguntur. Sed antiquus hostis, quo in eis fortiter deprehendi se conspicit, eo illa sub virtutum imagine altius abscon- dit. Unde et subditur:

Affliction puts vices to flight.—For the vices by no means recognize us when we are afflicted, because as soon as they have knocked at a sorrowful heart, they rebound rejected; and those which had, as it were, known us joyful, because they penetrated us, cannot recognize us mourning, because they are broken by our very rigor. But the ancient enemy, the more strongly he perceives himself detected in them, the more deeply he hides those things under the image of virtues. Whence it is added:
