V ers. 5. — Ataue utinam taceretis, (??)ut mutaremini esse sapientes. 35. Occultandas stultitiae utile silentium. — Sicut clausa janua in domo quae intus membra lateant ignoratur, sic plerumque stultus, si tacuerit, utrum sapiens sit, an stultus, absconditur, si tamen nulla alia opera prodeant quae sensum etiam tacentis lo- quantur. Sanctus igitur vir amicos suos aspiciens velle apparere quod non erant, eos ad tacendum admonuit, ne possent apparere quod erant. Unde et per Salomonem dicitur: Stultus, si tacuerit, sapiens putabitur ( Prov. xvii, 28).
第五節：「惟願你們閉口不言，這樣還可算為智慧！」三十五、緘默有助於遮掩愚昧。——正如房門關閉時，人不知裡面藏著什麼肢體，照樣，愚人若閉口不言，往往就被遮掩，叫人不知他是智是愚——只要沒有別的行為顯露出來，那些行為連緘默之人的心思也會道破。所以這聖潔的人見他的朋友想要顯出自己所不是的樣子，便勸他們緘默，免得他們顯出自己實在的樣子。故此也藉所羅門說：「愚昧人若閉口不言，也可算為智慧」（箴十七28）。
Verse 5: 'And would that you kept silent, that you might be reckoned wise!' 35. Silence is useful for concealing folly. — Just as, when the door is closed in a house, it is not known what limbs lie hidden within, so very often a fool, if he keeps silent, is concealed as to whether he be wise or foolish — provided, however, that no other works come forth which speak the mind even of one who is silent. The holy man, therefore, seeing his friends wishing to appear what they were not, admonished them to keep silence, lest they be able to appear what they were. Whence also through Solomon it is said: 'A fool, if he keep silence, shall be counted wise' (Prov. 17:28).
