909:1
67. A Dei sapientia sunt alieni, qui secundum Mar. nem mundumque sapiunt. — Quid hoc loco abyssum nisi corda hominum vocat ? quae et per lapsum fluida et per duplicitatis sunt caliginem tenebrosa. Quae nimirum abyssus non esse in se hanc sapientiam profitemur, quia iniqua mens dum esse sapiens carnaliter appetit, stultam se ad spiritalia ostendit. Nam qui, teste Paulo, Sapientia hujus mundi stultitia est apud Deum (I Cor. III. 19), tanto quisque amplius intus Mulus fit, quanto conatur exterius sapiens videri. ve hac abysso per Joannem dicitur: Vidi angelum descendentem de cœlo, habentem clavem abyssi, et catenam magnam in manu sua;
六十七。凡按肉體與世界思慮的人,都與神的智慧為外人。——他在此處所稱的深淵,不正是人的心嗎?這些心既因墮落而流蕩,又因兩面之心的幽暗而黑暗。而我們宣告這深淵本身沒有這智慧,因為邪惡的心思,當它渴望按肉體成為有智慧時,便顯出自己對屬靈之事是愚昧的。因為那人——有保羅為證——「這世界的智慧在神看是愚拙」(林前三19),凡人愈是竭力在外表顯為有智慧,就愈在內裡成為愚昧。論到這深淵,藉約翰說:「我看見一位天使從天降下,手裡拿著無底坑的鑰匙和一條大鏈子;
67. Those who savour according to the flesh and the world are strangers to the wisdom of God. — What does he here call the abyss but the hearts of men? which are both fluid through the fall and darkened through the gloom of duplicity. And this abyss we declare not to have this wisdom in itself, because the wicked mind, while it desires to be wise in a carnal way, shows itself foolish toward spiritual things. For he who—Paul being witness—'the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God' (1 Cor. 3:19), each one becomes so much the more foolish within, the more he strives to appear wise outwardly. Of this abyss it is said through John: 'I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand;
909:2
et apprehendit draconem serpentem autiquum, qui est diabolus, et salanns, et ligavit eum per annos mille, et misit iu abyssum, et clausit, et signavit super illum, ut non seducat amplius gentes, donec consumentur mille anni (Apoc. XX, I). Millenario etenim numero non quantitatem temporis, sed universitatem, qua regnat Ecclesia, designavit. Antiquus autem serpens ligatus catena in abyssum mittitur, a quia religatus a bonorum cordibus, apud reproborum mentes r. clusus, eis atrocius dominatur. Qui paulo post quoque de puteo abyssi educi describitur, quia de iniquorum cordibus nunc occulte sævientibus, tunc accepta contra Ecclesiam potestate, in vim aperte persecutionis b erump et.
and he laid hold of the dragon, the old serpent, which is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and cast him into the abyss, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should no more seduce the nations, till the thousand years be finished' (Rev. 20:1-3). For by the number of a thousand he designated not a quantity of time, but the totality throughout which the Church reigns. And the old serpent, bound with a chain, is cast into the abyss, because, bound away from the hearts of the good and shut up within the minds of the reprobate, he lords it over them more atrociously. And he is also described a little later as being led up from the pit of the abyss, because from the hearts of the wicked, now secretly raging, he will then, having received power against the Church, break out into open force of persecution.
909:3
Hæc itaque abyssus, in qua nunc diabolus servatur occultus, non esse in se sapientiam dicif, quia alienam se a vera sapientia iniquis operibus ostendit. Duin enim malitiam quisque tegit in corde, ore autem blandimenta exhibet, dum cogitationes suas duplicitate obnubilat, dum puritatis verba quasi fatuitatem devitat, dum vias simplicis innocentiae declinat, quasi habere se abyssus Dei sapientiam recusat. Et quia boic mundo Mentes deditae praesentis vitæ curis et sollicitudinibus perturbantur, et idcirco ejusdem sapientia tranquillitale perfrui nequaquam possunt, recte bubjungitur;
This abyss, therefore, in which the devil is now kept hidden, is said not to have wisdom in itself, because by its wicked works it shows itself a stranger to true wisdom. For while each one hides malice in his heart, yet shows flatteries with his mouth; while he beclouds his thoughts with duplicity; while he shuns the words of purity as though they were foolishness; while he turns aside from the ways of simple innocence—the abyss as it were refuses to possess the wisdom of God. And because minds given over to this world are troubled by the cares and anxieties of the present life, and therefore can by no means enjoy the tranquillity of that wisdom, it is rightly added:
