V ers. 21.— Terrebit eum tribulatio, et angustia val- labit eum, sicut regem qui praeparatur ad praelium. 47. Quot angustiis vallatur, qui securitatis sociam, viam veritatis relinquit. Plana est veritatis via; aspe- rum iter mendacii.—In omne quod iniquus agit tri- bulatione et angustia vallatur, quia cor ejus anxietate e et suspicione confunditur. Alius occulte appetit f vi aliena diripere, qui laborat in cogitationibus, ne 410 deprehendi valeat. Alius, relicta veritate, men- tiri deliberat, ut audientium animum fallat. Sed quantus labor est sollicite custodire ne ipsa ejus fal- lacia deprehendi queat?

第二十四節：「患難必使他驚惶，愁苦必圍困他，如同預備上陣的君王。」47. 那離棄真理之道——即平安之伴侶——的人，被何等多的困境所圍困。真理之道平坦；虛謊之路崎嶇。——不義之人所行的一切事上，都被患難與愁苦圍困，因為他的心被焦慮與疑懼攪擾。一人暗地渴望以強力搶奪別人的財物，就在思慮中勞苦，唯恐被察覺。另一人離棄真理，圖謀說謊，好欺騙聽者的心。但要小心提防、唯恐他的謊言被識破，這是何等的勞苦呢？

Verse 24: 'Tribulation shall terrify him, and anguish shall surround him, as a king who is prepared for battle.' 47. By how many straits is he surrounded who forsakes the way of truth, the companion of security. Plain is the way of truth; rough is the road of falsehood. — In everything that the wicked man does, he is surrounded by tribulation and anguish, because his heart is confounded by anxiety and suspicion. One man secretly desires to plunder another's goods by force, and labours in his thoughts lest he be caught. Another, having forsaken truth, deliberates to lie, that he may deceive the mind of his hearers. But how great is the labour anxiously to guard lest his very falsehood be detected?

Ponit quippe ante oculos quid sibi a veritatem scientibus responderi possit, et cum magno cogitatu pertractat quomodo per argu- menta falsitatis documenta veritatis exsuperet. Hinc inde se circumtegit, et contra hoc, ubi deprehendi potuerit, veritati similem responsionem quaerit, qui si vellet verum dicere, utique sine labore poluiss(??)t. Plana quippe veritatis via, et grave est iter mendacii. Unde et per prophetam dicitur: Docuerunt enim linguam suam loqui mendacium, ut inique agerent laboraverunt ( Jerem. ix, 5). Bene ergo dicitur: Terrebit eum tri- bulatio, et angustia vallabit eum, quia apud semetip- sum g in labore timoris deficit, qui securitatis sociam viam veritatis relinquit.

For he sets before his eyes what may be answered to him by those who know the truth, and with great deliberation he ponders how by the arguments of falsehood he may overcome the proofs of truth. On this side and that he covers himself round about, and against this — where he could be detected — he seeks a response similar to truth; who, if he had been willing to speak the truth, could assuredly have done so without labour. For plain is the way of truth, and heavy is the road of falsehood. Whence also through the prophet it is said: 'For they have taught their tongue to speak lies; they have laboured to act unjustly' (Jer. 9:5). Well therefore is it said: 'Tribulation shall terrify him, and anguish shall surround him,' because within himself he fails in the labour of fear, who forsakes the way of truth, the companion of security.

583:3

Qui bene regi praeparato ad praelium comparatur, quia in eo ipso malo quod agit, et terretur, et festinat, et ex conscientia trepidat. et ex desiderio anhelat, metuit et superbit, pa- vescit suspicionibus, et mentem per audaciam erigit. [ Vet. XXI.] Sciendum quoque est quia rex qui prae- paratur ad praelium sic de hoste suspectus est, h ut eidem quoque quem ducit exercitui metuat, ne la(??)e- factetur, ne per destitutionem militum jaculis pateat inimicorum.

Who is well compared to a king prepared for battle, because in that very evil which he does, he is both terrified and hastens, and from conscience he trembles, and from desire he pants, he fears and is proud, he is frightened by suspicions, and lifts up his mind through audacity. It is also to be known that a king who is prepared for battle is so suspicious of his enemy that he fears even the very army which he leads, lest it be weakened, lest through the desertion of soldiers he lie open to the darts of his enemies.

Iniquus ergo angustia vallatur, s(??)cut(??)rex qui praeparatur a ad praelium, quia videlicet falsa agens, falsa loquens, formidat ne suos amittat milites, id est, argumenta falsitatis, et veritatis jaculis pateat, si ei fortasse defuerit quod ex fallacia opponat. Sed quamvis animus trepidet, quamvis conscientia accu- set, cupiditate tamen sua iniquus vincitur, et suppresso pavore audaciam de iniquitatibus sumit. Et saepe etiam ultione menti proposita, se contra Deum erigit, quaelibet ab eo adversa perpeti deliberat, dummodo hic, dum valet, omne quod placet agat. Unde et sub- ditur:

The wicked man, therefore, is hemmed in by anguish, like a king who is being made ready for battle; for, plainly, since he acts falsely and speaks falsely, he is afraid that he may lose his soldiers—that is, the arguments of falsehood—and lie open to the darts of truth, should he perhaps lack something to set against it out of his deceit. Yet, although his mind trembles, although his conscience accuses him, the wicked man is nevertheless conquered by his own cupidity; and, his dread suppressed, he takes on boldness from his iniquities. And often, with vengeance set before his mind, he raises himself up against God, and resolves to endure any adversities from Him whatsoever, provided that here, while he has the strength, he may do everything that pleases him. Whence it is also added:
