830:1
V ers. 17. — Si subito apparuerit aurora, arbitran- tur umbram mortis. 77. Iniqui ex justorum prosveritate turbantur. — Iniqui semper afflictionem fidelium exspectant, eos- que in tribulatione videre desiderant. Et in tenebris domos perfodiunt, dum cor innocentium, sed tamen infirmorum, d dejectionis tempore pessima collocu- tione corrumpunt. Sed plerumque contingit ut dum bonos quosque in dejectione conspiciunt, subito oc- culta dispensatione divina justus quispiam qui vide- batur oppressus, aliqua saeculi potestate fulciatur, eique prosperitas vitae praesentis arrideat, quem prius adversitatis tenebrae premebant.
Verse 17. — If the dawn suddenly appear, they think it the shadow of death. 77. The wicked are troubled by the prosperity of the just. — The wicked always look for the affliction of the faithful, and desire to see them in tribulation. And they dig through houses in the darkness, when they corrupt the heart of the innocent, but nevertheless the weak, in the time of dejection by their most evil converse. But it often happens that, while they behold certain good men in dejection, suddenly by the hidden dispensation of God some just man who seemed oppressed is upheld by some power of the world, and the prosperity of the present life smiles upon him whom before the darkness of adversity oppressed.
830:2
Bene ergo dicitur: Si subito apparuerit aurora, arbitrantur umbram mortis.
Which prosperity of his, when the perverse behold, they are, as has been said, troubled. For at once they return to their own hearts, they recall before the eyes of the mind whatever they remember they have done perversely, they dread that every vice may be avenged in themselves; and whence he who receives power shines forth, thence every perverse man who fears to be corrected grows dark in sadness. Well, therefore, is it said: If the dawn suddenly appear, they think it the shadow of death. For the dawn is the mind of the just man, which, forsaking the darkness of its sin, breaks forth now to the light of eternity, as is also said of the holy Church: Who is she that cometh forth as the rising dawn (Canticles vi, 9)?
830:3
Quo igitur justus quisque justitiae luce irradians in prae- senti vita honoribus sublimatur, eo ante perverso- rum oculos tenebrae mortis fiunt, quia qui perversa se egisse meminerunt corrigi pertimescunt. Semper namque desiderant in suis pravitatibus relaxari, in- correcti vivere, et de culpa gaudium habere. Quorum ipsa lethalis laetitia convenienter exprimitur, cum protinus subinfertur:
Therefore, in proportion as each just man, radiant with the light of righteousness, is exalted with honours in the present life, in that same measure before the eyes of the perverse there comes the darkness of death, because those who remember that they have done perverse things dread to be corrected. For they always desire to be left loose in their depravities, to live uncorrected, and to have joy from their fault. Whose very deadly gladness is fittingly expressed, when it is straightway subjoined:
