V ers. 18. — Non concedit quiesci(??)re spiritum meum, et implet me amaritudinibus. 34. Job intui et fons affligitur.—Saepe justis exer- citium virtutis est sola exterius 304 adversa tole- rare. Sed ut eorum vires certamen plenae probationis erudiat, hos nonnunquam et foris tormenta lacerant, et intus tentamenta castigant. Unde vir sanctus im- pletum se amaritudinibus asserit, quia cum flagel(??)a exterius tolerat, illud est gravius quod de tentatione adversarii in intimis portat. Sed inter haec mitigat vim doloris considerata aequitas et potentis ferientis. Unde subjungit:
第十八節。祂不容我喘息，倒使我飽受苦楚。第三十四節。約伯內外都受苦。對義人而言，德行的操練往往只是承受外在的逆境。但為使一場完全試煉的爭戰磨練他們的力量，有時外面有苦刑撕裂他們，裡面有試探懲治他們。故此那聖人斷言自己飽受苦楚，因為當他在外面承受鞭打之時，那更沉重的乃是他在至深處為仇敵的試探所擔負的。但在這些事之間，那大能的擊打者所思度的公平緩和了痛苦的力量。故此他接著說：
Verse 18. He will not suffer my spirit to rest, and he fills me with bitternesses. 34. Job is afflicted inwardly and outwardly.—Often for the just the exercise of virtue is to tolerate outward adversities alone. But that the contest of a full trial may instruct their strength, sometimes both torments tear them from without, and temptations chastise them from within. Whence the holy man asserts himself to be filled with bitternesses, because while he tolerates scourges outwardly, that is heavier which he bears within concerning the temptation of the adversary in his inmost parts. But amid these things the considered equity of the mighty striker mitigates the force of the pain. Whence he subjoins:
