85:1
V ers. 5. Cumque in orbem transissent dies convi- vii, mittebat Job, et sanctificabat eos. 33 47. In bonis operibus purganda intentio.—Per- acto quippe orbe dierum convivii, mittere ad filios, eosque sanctificare, est post virtutum sensum, inten- tionem cordis dirigere, et omne quod agitur, districta retractationis discussione mundare; ne bona aesti- mentur quae mala sunt; ne saltem veraciter bona putentur sufficientia, cum perfecta non sunt. Sic enim mens plerumque decipitur, ut aut qualitate mali, aut boni quantitate fallatur. [ Vet. XXXV.] Sed hos virtutum sensus melius preces quam discussiones inveniunt;
第五節。筵宴的日子過完了,約伯就打發人去,叫他們成聖。四七、在善工中,動機當被潔淨。——因為當筵宴之日的循環完畢,打發人去到眾子那裡並使他們成聖,就是在操練諸德之後,端正內心的動機,並藉著嚴格重新省察的檢視,潔淨所行的一切;免得將惡事看為善事;也免得將那真正為善、卻尚未完全的事視為足夠。因為心靈多半這樣受欺,或被惡的性質、或被善的數量所迷惑。〔舊編三五〕但這些諸德的運作,禱告比省察更能查明;
Verse 5. And when the days of the feasting were gone about, Job sent and sanctified them. 47. In good works the intention is to be purified. — For when the round of the days of feasting was accomplished, to send to the sons and to sanctify them is, after the exercise of the virtues, to direct the intention of the heart, and to cleanse everything that is done by a strict scrutiny of reconsideration; lest things that are evil be esteemed good; lest at least the things truly good be thought sufficient when they are not perfect. For thus is the mind for the most part deceived, so as to be misled either by the quality of the evil or by the quantity of the good. [Old numbering XXXV.] But these workings of the virtues prayers find out better than scrutinies;
85:2
nam ea quae perscrutari in nobismetipsis plenius nitimur, saepe verius orando quam investi- gando penetramus. Cum enim mens per quamdam compunctionis machinam ad alia sustollitur f, omne, quod ei de se ipsa occurrerit, sub se ipsa dijudicando certius contemplatur. Unde et recte subjungitur:
因為我們竭力要在自己裡面更全然查究之事,我們往往藉禱告比藉探究更真實地洞察。因為當心靈被某種痛悔的機械提升到別的事物時,凡在它裡面浮現關於自身之事,它便將之置於自身之下加以判斷,因而更確實地默觀。故此經文恰當地接著說:
for the things which we strive to search out more fully in ourselves, we often penetrate more truly by praying than by investigating. For when the mind is lifted up to other things by a certain engine of compunction, whatever occurs to it concerning itself, it contemplates more surely by judging it beneath itself. Whence it is rightly added:
