I bid.— Dominus dedit, Dominus abstulit. 86. Tentatione eruditi crescimus. — Ecce tentatio- nibus eruditus crevit, qui et in virtute habita largi- tatem dantis, et in perturbatione fortitudinis, po- testatem tollentis agnoscit. Quae tamen fortitudo non tollitur, sed perturbata fatigatur; quatenus concussa mens, dum se hanc jamjamque quasi amittere trepi- dat, semper facta humilis nunquam perdat.
同一處。——賞賜的是耶和華，收取的也是耶和華。八十六、我們藉試探受教而長進。——看哪，他藉試探受教而長進，因為他既在所擁有的美德中認出賞賜者的慷慨，又在攪擾中認出那收取勇德者的大能。然而這勇德並非被奪去，乃是被攪擾而疲憊；為要使那受震動的心靈，一面戰兢彷彿正在失去它，一面因常被造就得謙卑，卻永不失去它。
In the same place. — The Lord gave, the Lord hath taken away. 86. Instructed by temptations we grow. — Behold, instructed by temptations he grew, who recognizes both, in the virtue possessed, the bounty of the Giver, and, in the disturbance, the power of Him who takes away the fortitude. This fortitude, however, is not taken away, but, being disturbed, is wearied; so that the shaken mind, while it now trembles as if just now losing it, being always made humble, may never lose it.
