Vv. 11, 12.—If they shall hear and observe, they shall complete their days in good, and their years in glory. But if they shall not hear, they shall pass by the sword, and shall be consumed in folly. 57. How severely are they to be punished, who are not restrained even by scourges from their ruinous ways.—By 'good' is designated right action, but by 'glory' the supernal recompense. Those, therefore, who strive to obey the heavenly precepts complete their days in good, their years in glory, because they carry through both the course of the present time in right work, and their consummation in blessed recompense. But if they shall not hear, they shall pass by the sword, and be consumed in folly, because vengeance strikes them in tribulation, and their end closes in foolishness.

Et de quibus sub Babylonis specie dicitur: Curavimus Babylonem, et non est sanata (Jerem. LI, 9). De quibus rursum dicitur: InterIeci et perdidi populum meum et tamen a viis suis non sunt reversi (Jerem. xv, 7). Hi nonnunquam deteriores existunt ex verbere, quia pulsati doloribus, c aut contumaci pertinacia duriores existunt, aut, quod pcjus est, in blasphemiæ etiam exasperationem prosiliunt.

For there are some whom not even torments restrain from their ruinous ways. Of whom it is said through the Prophet: 'Thou hast struck them, and they have not grieved; thou hast scourged them, and they have refused to receive correction' (Jer. 5:3). And of whom it is said under the figure of Babylon: 'We have cured Babylon, and she is not healed' (Jer. 51:9). Of whom again it is said: 'I have slain and destroyed my people, and yet they have not returned from their ways' (Jer. 15:7). These sometimes become worse from the stripe, because, struck with pains, they either become harder through stubborn obstinacy, or—what is worse—leap forth even into the exasperation of blasphemy.

Bene ergo dicitur quod per gladium transeunt, et stultitia consumuntur, quia peccata quae flagellis emendare 840 debue. rant, flagellis exaggerant. Et hic jam poenas percussionis. sentiunt, et illic justæ retributionis supplicia non evadunt. Fatuitas quippe stultitiæ est quod illos sic iniquitas obligat, ut a culpa eos nec poena compescat. Well, therefore, is it said that they pass by the sword, and are consumed in folly, because the sins which they ought to have amended by scourges, they aggravate by the scourges. And here already they feel the pains of the striking, and there they escape not the punishments of just recompense. For it is the foolishness of folly that iniquity so binds them that not even punishment restrains them from guilt. There follows:
