913:1
sermonis philosophiœ. — Quid euim per Indiam quae nigrum populum mittit, nisi hic mundus accipitur, in quo vita hominum per culpam obscura generatur. Tincti autem colores indiae, sunt hujus mundi sapientes; qui quamvis per infidelitatem et plerumque per actionem foedi sint, ante humanos tamen ocnlos superductae honestatis colore fucantur. Sed cOæterna Dei sapientia tinctis Indiae coloribus non confertur, quia quisquis hanc veraciter intelligit, ab his hominibus quos mundus sapientes coluit quam longe distet agnoscit. ipsaque ejus inandatorum verba ab hujus mundi sapientibus differunt, qui dum intenduni eloquentiar, eorum dicta quasi pulehra apparent specie, et fucatione tincturæ;
……論哲學的言論。——因為印度既差出黑膚的民眾,它所表徵的,不正是這世界嗎?在其中人的生命因過犯而生為黑暗。而印度所染的顏色,乃是這世界的智者;他們雖因不信、又往往因自己的行為而污穢,卻在人的眼前被外加尊貴的顏色所塗染。然而與神同永的智慧,不與印度所染的顏色相比,因為凡真正明白它的,都認出它與那些世界所培育為智者的人相距何等遙遠。它誡命的話語本身,也與這世界的智者有別;那些智者既專注於口才,他們的話語便彷彿有美麗的形貌、有染料的塗飾;
...of the discourse of philosophy. — For what is received by India, which sends forth a black people, but this world, in which the life of men is begotten dark through fault? But the dyed colours of India are the wise men of this world; who, although through infidelity and very often through their action they are foul, yet before human eyes are tinctured with the colour of an overlaid honour. But the co-eternal wisdom of God is not compared with the dyed colours of India, because whosoever truly understands it recognizes how far it stands apart from those men whom the world has cultivated as wise. And the very words of its commandments differ from the wise men of this world, who, while they aim at eloquence, their sayings appear as it were of beautiful form, and of the tinting of dye;
913:2
and while they lack the power of the realities, they lie by the compositions of words, as by overlaid colours, that they are something other than they are. On the contrary, the doctrine of wisdom is beautiful even by preaching, and conspicuous with pure truth; nor does it pretend one thing outwardly through fallacy and reserve another inwardly; nor does it seek to appear beautiful in its sayings by the glitter of speech, but by the integrity of truth. In its commandments, therefore, the wisdom of God is not compared with the dyed colours of India, because, while it has not the painted ornaments of eloquence, it pleases as a garment without dye. This tinting of dye Paul had well despised, when he said: 'Which things also we speak, not in the learned words of human wisdom, but in the doctrine of the Spirit' (1 Cor. 2:13).
913:3
For he preferred to display this wisdom by the pure truth alone, and not to tinct it by the dyeing of speech. There follows:
