434:1
I bid. — Neque enim possum metuens respondere 64. Timor digna Deo pro ejus donis obsequia non reddit. — Respondere quippe cuilibet dicimur cum factis illius digna opera repensamus. Deo ergo res- pondere est donis ejus praecedentibus nostra obsequia reddere. Unde et psalmi quidam, in quibus sancta operatio imitanda proponitur, ad respondendum scripti praenotantur. Rectum itaque Deus hominem condidit, eumque ad perversa defluentem cum longa- nimitate toleravit. Quotidie culpam aspicit, et tamen vivendi spatia non citius abscidit; dona largitur be- nignitate sua, et erga malos utitur patientia sua. Respondere homo tot beneficiis debet;
同節——因為我在懼怕時不能回答。第六十四節:懼怕不能向神獻上配得祂恩賜的敬奉。——因為當我們以配得某人作為的行為回報他時,我們才被說成回答了他。所以回答神,就是以我們的敬奉回報祂在先的恩賜。因此某些詩篇,就是其中陳明當效法之聖潔工作的,被預先題記為「為回答而寫」。所以神造人本是正直的,並以恆久的忍耐容忍那流蕩趨向乖謬之事的人。祂天天看見罪過,卻不因此更快地剪除他活著的年日;祂憑祂的良善賜下恩賜,向惡人施展祂的忍耐。人本當回報這麼多的恩惠;
Same verse. — For I cannot answer while fearing. 64. Fear renders not to God homage worthy of His gifts. — For we are said to answer anyone when we repay deeds worthy of his own. To answer God, therefore, is to render our homage to His preceding gifts. Whence certain psalms also, in which holy operation is set forth to be imitated, are inscribed beforehand as being written for answering. God therefore made man upright, and bore with him with long-suffering as he flowed down to perverse things. Daily He beholds fault, and yet does not the more quickly cut off the spaces of living; He bestows gifts by His benignity, and toward the evil uses His patience. Man owes to answer to so many benefits;
434:2
yet nevertheless while fearing he is not able to answer, since whoever still servilely dreads the Creator of the human race, without doubt loves Him not. For then only do we render true homage to God, when we fear Him not because of the confidence of love; when affection, not dread, directs us to good works; when evil no longer pleases our mind, even if it be permitted. For he who is restrained from the work of perversity out of fear, would willingly do perverse things, if it were permitted. By no means, therefore, is he truly upright who is not yet free from the desire of depravity. Well therefore is it said: For I cannot answer while fearing, since we render not true homage to God, if we serve His commandments out of fear, and not rather out of love.
434:3
Sed b cum menti nostrae ejus dulcedinis amor accenditur, omne desiderium praesentis vitae levigatur, in taedium dilectio vertitur, atque hanc cum moerore mens to- lerat, cui victa prius reprobo amore serviebat. Unde et apte subditur:
But when the love of His sweetness is kindled in our mind, every desire of the present life is made light; love is turned into weariness, and the mind bears with sorrow that life which, once vanquished, it served with reprobate love. Whence also it is fittingly added:
