57. Sæviente persecutione, fortes et qui in corpore Ecclesiæ sunt velut ossa deficiunt. — Si ipsi historiæ intendimus, patet causa, quoniam sancti viri corpus per sinus ulcerum scaturiens vermium multitudo lacerabat. Si vero allegoriæ mysterium perscrmamur, quid per ossa nisi fortes quique in sanctæ Ecclesiae corpore designantur ? 664 Qui quasi suo robore membra continent, dum mores infirmantium stabiliter portant. Sed cum tribulationis ultimæ contra eam fervor excreverit, in nocte os illius perforatur' doloribus, quia nonnunquam tormentis victi, etiam ipsi ad perfidiam defluunt, qui ad fidem alios tenere videbantur. Ait ergo: Nocte os meum perforatur doloribus. Ac si aperte dicat:
五十七。當逼迫猖獗時，那些在教會身體中的剛強者，便彷彿骸骨般衰竭。——我們若留意字面的歷史，緣由是明顯的，因為一大群蟲子在這聖人潰瘍的褶皺中湧動，正撕裂著他的身體。但我們若探究寓意的奧祕，骸骨所表明的是甚麼，若不是聖教會身體中那些剛強的人？他們彷彿以自己的力量，維繫著眾肢體，就是當他們堅定地擔負軟弱人的行事為人時。但當末後患難的熱潮高漲攻擊她時，在黑夜裡他的骸骨被疼痛穿透，因為有時連那些看似維繫別人於信德的人，也被酷刑所勝，自己流向了不信。所以他說：在黑夜裡我的骸骨被疼痛穿透。彷彿他公然說：
57. When persecution rages, the strong, who are in the body of the Church, fail as it were like bones. — If we attend to the history itself, the cause is plain, since a multitude of worms, teeming through the folds of his ulcers, was mangling the holy man's body. But if we search out the mystery of the allegory, what is designated by bones if not the strong ones in the body of the holy Church? Who, as it were by their own strength, hold the members together, while they steadfastly bear the ways of the weak. But when the fervour of the last tribulation has grown high against her, in the night his bone is pierced with pains, because sometimes even those very ones who seemed to hold others to the faith, being overcome by torments, themselves flow down to perfidy. Tribulationis tenebris pressi, ita afflictione f terebrautur, ut et ipsi qui in me habebant vigorem fortitudinis, quasi jam quoddam habeant foramen tirnoris. Bene autem dicitur: Et qui me comedunt non dormiunt, quia maligni spiritus, qui carnales quosque de Ecclesia consumunt, tanto magis quiescere a tentatione nesciunt, quanto nullo carnis pondere gravantur. Sed persecutores sanctæ Ecclesiae quia valde perversi sunt, essent utinam pauci. Sequitur:

Well is it said: And those who devour me do not sleep; for the malignant spirits, who consume all who are carnal within the Church, are the less able to rest from temptation the more that they are weighed down by no burden of the flesh.
