789:1
511 V ers. 28. — Decernes rem, et veniet tibi. 27.
Verse 28. — Thou shalt decree a thing, and it shall come to thee. The false judgments of men concerning adversity and prosperity. — This is wont to be the peculiar judgment of the weak-minded: to esteem anyone the more just, the more they behold him attaining all that he desires — whereas, of course, we know that sometimes earthly goods are withdrawn from the just, which are bestowed by a lavish gift upon the unjust; because physicians order to be given to desperate patients whatever they demand, but refuse to give what they crave to those whom they foresee can be brought back to health. But if Eliphaz spoke these words concerning spiritual gifts, it should be known that a thing is decreed and comes when the virtue that is sought out of desire is, by God's bestowing, also prospered in its effect.
