160:1
V ers. 4, 5. — Respondens Satan ait: Pellem pro pelle, et cuncta quae habet homo, dabit pro anima sua. Alioquin mitte manum tuam, et tange os ejus et carnem, et tunc videbis quod in faciem benedicat tibi. 28. Satan unde sciat Christum, unde de eo dubitet. In charitate ac patientia Christi aestimanda unde fal- latur. Satanae loquela tum per se, tum per suos. — Malignus spiritus cum Redemptorem nostrum mira- culis coruscare conspicit, clamat: Scimus d qui sis, Sanctus Dei ( Luc. iv, 34). Qui haec dicens, cogno- scendo Dei Filium pertimescit; sed tamen vim super- nae pietatis ignorans, nonnunquam dum passibilem considerat, hominem purum putat.
第四、五節。撒但回答說：以皮代皮，人願意用一切所有的保全性命。你且伸手傷他的骨頭和肉，他必當面棄掉你。撒但從何認識基督，又從何懷疑祂。他在估量基督的愛心與忍耐上從何被欺。撒但時而藉己親自說話，時而藉他的黨羽說話。那惡靈看見我們的救主以神蹟閃耀時，就喊叫說：「我認得你是誰，乃是神的聖者」（路四34）。他說這話，在認出神的兒子時是懼怕的；但他仍不知那至高慈愛的大能，有時當他看祂是能受苦的，便以為祂不過是人。
Verses 4, 5. And Satan answering said: Skin for skin, and all that a man has he will give for his life. But put forth your hand, and touch his bone and flesh, and then you will see that he blesses you to your face. Whence Satan knows Christ, whence he doubts about Him. Whence he is deceived in estimating the charity and patience of Christ. Satan speaks now through himself, now through his own. The malignant spirit, when he beholds our Redeemer flashing with miracles, cries out: 'We know who you are, the Holy One of God' (Luke 4:34). Who, saying these things, in recognizing the Son of God, is afraid; but yet, ignorant of the power of the supernal loving-kindness, sometimes, while he considers Him passible, thinks Him mere man.

Multos autem sub sanctitatis specie in pastorali positos loco didi- cerat, qui a visceribus cbaritatis alieni valde, pro minimo aliena damna pensabant. Hunc ergo quasi ex aliis colligens, quia subtractis multis, superari non vidit, usque ad ejus carnem, per tactum passionis sic exarsit, ut diceret: Pellem pro pelle, et cuncta quoe habet homo, dabit pro anima sua. Alioquin mitte ma- num tuam, et tange os ejus et carnem, et tunc vide- bis quod in faciem benedicat tibi. Ac si aperte dicat: Moveri ex his, quae extra se sunt, negligit; sed tunc veraciter qui sit agnoscitur, si in se ipso quod do- leat, experiatur. Haec por se Satan cum fieri appetit, non verbis, sed desideriis dixit.
但他已察知，許多披著聖潔外貌、被置於牧養之位的人，遠離愛心的肺腑，將別人的損失看得極其輕微。於是他彷彿以他人來揣度這一位，因既撤去了許多事物，卻不見祂被勝過，便藉受苦的觸擊，甚至向祂的肉身發作，說：「以皮代皮，人願意用一切所有的保全性命。你且伸手傷他的骨頭和肉，他必當面棄掉你。」彷彿他明白地說：他對身外之物置之不動；但若他在自己身上經歷到可悲之事，那時才真正認出他是誰。這些事，當撒但渴望它們成就時，他是藉己親自說的，不是用言語，乃是用意欲。
But he had learned that many, set in the pastoral place under the appearance of sanctity, being greatly alien from the bowels of charity, esteemed the losses of others as of very little account. Reckoning this One, therefore, as it were from the others, because, though many things were withdrawn, he did not see Him overcome, he so blazed forth even to His flesh, through the touch of the passion, that he said: 'Skin for skin, and all that a man has he will give for his life. But put forth your hand, and touch his bone and flesh, and then you will see that he blesses you to your face.' As if he plainly said: He neglects to be moved by those things which are outside himself; but then is it truly recognized who he is, if he experiences in his very self something to grieve over. These things, when he desires them to be done, Satan said through himself, not with words, but with desires.
160:3
Haec per membra s a et verbis et desideriis intulit. Ipse quippe loquitur, cum juxta prophetae vocem ejus, sequaces dicunt: Mittamus lignum in panem ejus, et eradamus eum de terra viventium ( Jerem. xi, 19). Lignum quippe in panem mittere, est configendo ejus corpori stipitem crucis adhibere; et vitam illius de terra viventium eradere se posse existimant, quem dum mortalem conspiciunt, finiri morte suspicantur.
這些事他藉著他的肢體，既用言語又用意欲來成就。因為當按先知的話，他的黨羽說：「我們把樹木放在他的餅裡，將他從活人之地剪除」（耶十一19）時，是他自己在說話。因為把樹木放在他的餅裡，就是把十字架的木樁釘在祂身上；他們以為能將祂的生命從活人之地剪除，因他們看祂是必死的，便疑心祂會被死亡了結。
These things through his members he brought about both with words and with desires. For he himself speaks, when, according to the voice of the prophet, his followers say: 'Let us put wood into his bread, and let us cut him off from the land of the living' (Jer. 11:19). For to put wood into his bread is to apply the stake of the cross to fasten His body; and they esteem that they can cut off His life from the land of the living, whom, while they behold Him mortal, they suspect to be ended by death.
