I bid. — Et arguitis me opprobriis meis. 35. Falsa reproborum de justorum flagellis judicia. — Quia hi qui eum justum ante flagella noverant, injustum esse ex ipsa jam sua percussione judicabant. Unde et saepe haeretici, quia affligi quosdam intra sanctam Ecclesiam vilent, scriptum quippe de Deo est: Flagellat omnem filium c quem recipit ( Hebr. xii, 6), tribulationes fidelium non nisi ex peccato esse suspicantur, seque ideo justos credunt, quia, in pra- vitatis suae sensu dimissi, sine flagello duruerunt. The false judgments of the reprobate concerning the scourges of the just. — Because those who had known him to be just before the scourges, now judged him to be unjust from his very smiting. Whence heretics also often, because they see certain ones afflicted within the holy Church — for it is written of God: 'He scourges every son whom He receives' (Hebrews xii, 6) — suspect that the tribulations of the faithful are from nothing but sin; and they believe themselves therefore to be just, because, being left in the perception of their own depravity, they have grown hard without a scourge.
