904:1
58. In saxeis gentilium cordibus Deus fluvios prædicationis aperuit. — Id est, in duris gentilium cordibus fluvios prædicationis aperuit, sicut per prophetam quoque de irriganda dicitur ariditate gentilium: Posuit desertum in stagnum d aquarum, et terram sines aqua in exitus aquarum (Psal. evi, 35). Atque in Evangelio promittit Dominus, dicens: Qui credit in me, sicut dicit Scriptura, flumina aquæ vir. de ventre ejus fluent (Joan. VII, 88).
58. In the stony hearts of the Gentiles God opened rivers of preaching. — That is, in the hard hearts of the Gentiles He opened rivers of preaching, even as it is said through the prophet concerning the dryness of the Gentiles to be watered: 'He turned the desert into pools of water, and the dry land into water-springs' (Ps. CVII, 35). And in the Gospel the Lord promises, saying: 'He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water' (John VII, 38). Which promise we then heard, and even now we see fulfilled. For behold, in the holy preachers, and those not born of Judaea, throughout the whole Church spread over all the world, the streams of the heavenly commandments flow abundantly from the mouth of the Gentiles.
904:2
Quia enim in petris rivos aperuit, ex duris quoque 583 cordibus fluvius sanctæ prædicationis emanavit. Sequitur:
For because He opened streams in the rocks, out of hard hearts also flowed the river of holy preaching. There follows:
