Verse 13. — They themselves were rebels against the light. 70. The punishment of those who spurn the divine light is blindness. — Very often the perverse both know the right things which they ought to follow, and yet despise to follow what they know. They are rebels, therefore, against the light, because, following their own desires, they despise the good which they have come to know. Those, then, who offend not through ignorance but through pride, oppose the shield of their exaltation to the darts of truth, lest they be salutarily struck in the heart. From this pride of theirs it comes about that, because they will not do the things they know, they no longer even know the good things they might do, but their own blindness utterly shuts them out from the light of truth.
