53. Sicque a peccato compescimur. — Quid in sibilo, nisi intentio admirationis exprimitur ? Si vero in sibilo alia fortasse significatio quæritur moriente peccatore, iii qui interitum ejus aspiciunt, os in sibiio stringunt, dum ad ea quae contempserant verba spiriialia convertuntur, ut jam credere et prædicare incipiant quæ prius dum iniquum florere cernerent non credebant. Nam fit plerumque ut infirmorum animus eo magis b de auditu veritatis trepidet, quo florere contemptores veritatis videt. Sed dum justa ultio injustos subtrahit, alios a pravitate compescit. Unde per Salomonem dicitur: Multato pestilente, sapientior erit parvulus (prov. XXI, 11).
五十三、如此我們便被約束遠離罪。——那「噓聲」所表達的，若非驚異之情，還能是什麼呢？但倘若在這噓聲中或許還可尋見別的意義：當罪人死亡時，那些觀看他滅亡的人便以噓聲吸氣，因為他們轉向了先前所輕看的屬靈之言，以致如今開始相信並宣講他們從前見惡人昌盛時所不信的事。因為常有這樣的情形：軟弱者的心愈見輕視真理者昌盛，就愈在聽見真理時戰兢。但當公義的刑罰除滅不義之人時，卻約束了別人遠離邪僻。故藉所羅門說：「褻慢人受刑罰，愚蒙人便得智慧」（箴言二十一章11節）。
53. And so we are restrained from sin. — What is expressed by the hiss, if not the intent of wonder? But if perchance in the hiss some other meaning is sought, when the sinner dies, those who behold his ruin draw in their mouth with a hiss, while they are converted to the spiritual words which they had despised, so that now they begin to believe and preach what before, when they saw the wicked man flourishing, they did not believe. For it often happens that the mind of the weak trembles the more at hearing the truth, the more it sees the despisers of truth flourish. But while just vengeance carries off the unjust, it restrains others from perversity. Whence it is said by Solomon: 'When the pestilent man is punished, the little one shall be wiser' (Proverbs XXI, 11).
