V ers. 14.— Quid est homo, ut immaculatus sit? 37. Home ex humo et ex muliere ortus, qui possit esse sine macula? —Eo enim ipso quo dicitur homo, terrenus exprimitur et infirmus: homo enim ab humo appellatus est. Et quomodo esse valet sine macula, qui sponte sua ad infirmitatem concidit factus de terra? Ubi et additur,—I bid.— Et ut justus appareat natus de muliere. Primam quippe viro injustitiam mulier pro- pinavit in paradiso. Quomodo ergo justus apparebit, qui de illa natus est quae injustitiae propinatrix exsti- tit? Sequitur:
第十四節：「人是什麼，竟能無瑕呢？」37. 人由塵土並由婦人而生，誰能無玷污呢？——因為單憑他被稱為「人」（homo）這一點，就顯明他是屬地的、軟弱的：因為「人」是由「塵土」（humus）得名。而他既是由塵土所造，又自願墮入軟弱，怎能無玷污呢？同一節又加上：「並且他為婦人所生，怎能顯為義？」因為在樂園中，正是那婦人首先把不義遞給男人。那麼，他既是由那位遞出不義者所生，怎能顯為義呢？接著說：
Verse 14: 'What is man, that he should be spotless?' 37. Man, sprung from the earth and from woman — who can he be without stain? — For by this very fact that he is called 'man,' he is expressed as earthly and infirm: for man (homo) is named from the earth (humus). And how can he be without stain, who of his own accord fell to infirmity, being made of earth? Where also is added — same verse — 'And that he should appear righteous, being born of woman.' For it was the woman who first in paradise offered unrighteousness to the man. How then shall he appear righteous, who is born of her who stood forth as the offerer of unrighteousness? There follows:
