1025:1
25. A maledictis. abstinendum. — Peccaret quippe si hoc optaret a Deo fieri, quod ipse facere, vel omnino non posset, vel, si posset, minime deceret. Nam qui maledictionibus 710 inimicum impetunt, quid aliud in illo fecere Deum volunt, nisi quod ipsi facere aut nequeunt, aut erubescunt? Mortem namque adversalio exoptant, quam et si possunt inferre metuunt, ne aut perpetrati bomicidii rei teneantur, aut iniqui appareant etiam cum sini. Quid est ergo Deo dicere: Occide quem odi, nisi apertis ei vocihus clamare: Hoc fac meo adversario, quod me in illum facere nec peccatorem decet ? In quibus profecto verbis pensandum nobis est, ubi iste vir legerat: Diligite inimicos vestros (Luc. VI, 27, 35);
二十五、當戒絕咒詛。因為他若願神成就那他自己或全然不能行、或縱能行也絕不合宜之事,他就是犯罪。因為那用咒詛攻擊仇敵的人,他們願神在那人身上所行的,豈非就是他們自己或不能行、或羞於行之事麼?因為他們渴望對頭的死,這事縱使他們能施行,也懼怕去行,唯恐或被算為所犯凶殺的罪人,或即或行了也顯為邪惡。那麼,對神說:「殺我所恨的人」,除了用公開的聲音向祂呼喊:「求你向我的對頭行那連我這罪人也不宜向他行之事」以外,還是甚麼呢?在這些話中,我們實在當權衡:這人曾在何處讀到:「要愛你們的仇敵」(路加福音六章27、35節);
25. Curses are to be abstained from. For he would sin if he wished that to be done by God, which he himself either could not at all do, or, if he could, it would by no means be fitting. For those who assail an enemy with curses, what else do they wish God to do in him, except what they themselves either cannot do, or are ashamed to do? For they long for the death of an adversary, which even if they can inflict, they fear to, lest they be either held guilty of perpetrated homicide, or appear wicked even when they are. What, then, is it to say to God: Kill him whom I hate, except to cry out to Him with open voices: Do this to my adversary, which to do against him befits not even me, a sinner? In which words indeed it is to be weighed by us where this man had read: Love your enemies (Luke VI, 27, 35);
1025:2
where he had read: Bless, and do not curse (Rom. XII, 14); and again: Not rendering evil for evil, nor curse for curse (1 Pet. III, 9). But he was keeping the precepts of supernal grace, not heard outwardly, because these the inbreathing of the Holy Spirit was writing in the mind of that holy man. Yet it would have been too little for him that he should love those placed outside, unless he also tolerated as familiar adversaries even those living within and daily conversing with him. Whence he subjoins:
