901:1
54. Humililatis Chiristi vias ignorantes, ejus mortis fructum amiserunt. — Quis hoc loco ovis nomine, nisi ille signatur, qui corpus carneum quod assumpsit, ascendendo ad aethera libravit? Qui apte quoque etiam vulturis appellatione exprimitur. Vultur quippe dum volat, si jacens cadaver conspicit, ad esum se cadaveris deponit; et plerumque sic in morte capitur, dum ad mortuum animai de summis venit. Recte ergo mediatur Dei et hominum redemptor noster vulturis appellatione signatur, qui manens in altitudine divinitatis suæ, b quasi a quodam volatu sublimi cadaver mortalitatis nostrae conspexit in infimis, et sese de cœlestibus ad ima submisit.
54. 他們因不認識基督謙卑的道路，便失去了祂死亡的果子。──在此處以飛鳥之名所表明的，若不是那位藉升到諸天而將祂所取的肉身之體高舉上騰者，還能是誰呢？祂也恰當地以禿鷹之稱來表達。因為禿鷹在飛翔時，若望見下面躺著的屍體，便降下自己去吃那屍體；牠常這樣在死亡中被擒，正當牠從高處來到死屍那裡。故此，我們的救贖主、神與人之間的中保，恰當地以禿鷹之稱來表明；祂住在祂神性的高處，彷彿從某種崇高的飛翔中，望見我們必死之屍體在深處，便從天上的事物降下自己到至卑之地。
54. Being ignorant of the ways of Christ's humility, they lost the fruit of His death. — Who is signified in this place by the name of a bird, but He who by ascending to the heavens weighed aloft the fleshly body which He assumed? Who is fitly also expressed by the appellation of a vulture. For a vulture, while it flies, if it beholds a carcass lying below, lowers itself to the eating of the carcass; and often is thus caught in death, while it comes from the heights to the dead beast. Rightly therefore is our Redeemer, the mediator of God and men, signified by the appellation of a vulture, who, abiding in the height of His divinity, as if from some lofty flight beheld the carcass of our mortality in the depths, and let Himself down from the heavenly things to the lowest.

Fieri quippe propter nos homo dignatus est, et dum mortuum animai petiit, mortem apud nos qui apud se erat immortalis invenit. Sed hujus vulturis oculus fuit ipsa intentio nostræ resurrectionis, quia ipse ad tridnum mortuus, ab:eterna nos morte liberavit. Ille ergo perfidus Judææ populus mortalem vidit; c sed quomodo morte sua nostram murtern destrueret, minime attendit. Conspexit quidem vulturem, sed oculos vulturis non aspexit. Qui dum humilitatis ejus vias quibus nos ad alta sublevavit considerare noluit, semitam avis ignoravil. Neque enim pensare studuit quod ejus nos humilitas levaret ad cœlestia et mortis ejus intentio reformaret ad vitam.
因為祂為我們的緣故甘願成為人，當祂尋找那死屍時，本身不朽的祂在我們中間尋見了死亡。但這禿鷹的眼睛，乃是我們復活的旨意本身，因為祂死了三天，便救我們脫離永死。那背信的猶大百姓因此看見祂是必死的；但祂如何藉自己的死摧毀我們的死，他們卻毫不留意。他們固然望見了禿鷹，卻不注視禿鷹的眼睛。因為當他們不肯思想祂謙卑的道路──藉此祂將我們高舉──他們就不認識這飛鳥的路徑。他們毫不用心去衡量：祂的謙卑要將我們提升到天上的事物，祂死亡的旨意要更新我們得生命。
For He deigned to become man for our sake, and while He sought the dead beast, He, who in Himself was immortal, found death among us. But the eye of this vulture was the very intention of our resurrection, because He, dead for three days, freed us from eternal death. That perfidious people of Judaea therefore saw Him mortal; but how by His own death He might destroy our death, they by no means attended to. They beheld the vulture indeed, but the eyes of the vulture they did not regard. For while they would not consider the ways of His humility by which He raised us on high, they were ignorant of the bird's path. For they took no care to weigh that His humility should lift us to the heavenly things, and the intention of His death should reform us unto life.
901:3
Semitam igitur ignoravit avis, nec intuitus est oculos vulturis, quia etsi vidit cum quem in morte tenuit, videre noluit d quanta vitam nostram gloria de ejus morte sequeretur. Unde et ad crudelitatem quoque persecutionis exarsit, verba vitæ 581 recipere rennit, prædicatores regni coelorum prohibendo, sæviendo, feriendo repulit. Qui scilicet repulsi Judæam ad quam missi ruerant deserentes, in gentilitatis collectionem dispersi sunt. Unde adhuc subditur:
因此他不認識這飛鳥的路徑，也不注視禿鷹的眼睛，因為他雖看見自己置於死地的那位，卻不肯看見我們的生命要從祂的死得著何等大的榮耀。故此他甚至烈怒到逼迫的殘忍，拒絕領受生命之道，並藉禁止、狂暴、擊打把天國的傳道者趕回去。這些傳道者被如此趕逐，便離棄他們奉差急赴的猶大地，分散進入外邦人的聚集之中。故此又補充說：
He was ignorant therefore of the bird's path, nor did he look upon the eyes of the vulture, because although he saw Him whom he held in death, he would not see with how great glory our life should follow from His death. Whence also he blazed forth even to the cruelty of persecution, refused to receive the words of life, and drove back the preachers of the kingdom of heaven by forbidding, by raging, by striking. Who, being thus driven back, forsaking the Judaea to which they had rushed when sent, were dispersed into the gathering of the Gentiles. Whence it is further subjoined:
