780:1
V ers. 19. — Videbunt justi, et laetabuntur, et inno- cens subsannabit eos. 18.
Verse 19. — The just shall see, and shall rejoice, and the innocent shall deride them. The just now waste away over the sins of the wicked, though they will one day rejoice at their destruction. — When the just here behold the unjust going astray, they cannot rejoice at the error of those who are perishing. For if they rejoice in errors, they are not just. Again, if they rejoice by way of insult that they are not such as they behold others to be, they are altogether proud. Hence too the Pharisee lost his justification, because, rejoicing in his own merits, he set himself before the publican, saying: I give thee thanks that I am not as the rest of men, robbers, unjust, adulterers, as also this publican (Luke 18:11).
780:2
Again, if we say that the just can exult with perfect joy at the death of the depraved, what kind of joy is there in this world over the punishment of sinners, in which the life of the just themselves is still uncertain? Let us therefore distinguish the times of trembling and of exultation. For now the just see the unjust, and waste away over their wickedness. And when they behold them struck down, they too become anxious for their own life. When, therefore, shall the just see the destruction of the wicked and rejoice, save when, in perfect security of exultation, they shall cleave to the strict Judge — when in that final scrutiny they shall behold the condemnation of those men, and shall no longer have anything of their own to fear?
780:3
Now, then, they look upon the reprobate and groan; then they shall look and deride, because they shall despise with exultation those whom now they cannot see committing iniquities without groaning, nor dying for their iniquity without fear. Hence, by what is added, it is shown that this is said concerning their final condemnation; for immediately there is added:
