21. Qui aliis prœsunt, Deo se subesse semper attendant. — Qui venturum judicem cogitat, indesinenler quotidie rationum suarum in melius causas parat; 6 qui æternum Dominum tremore cordis intuetur, jura temporalis dominii super subjeclos moderari compellitur. Perpendit enim nil esse quod temporaliter præest caeteris, quando illi ad reddendam rationem subest qui sine fine dominatur. Saepe namque transitoria potestas animum per abrupta elationis rapit, Et quia eo quisque extollitur, quo se esse super aliquos videt, illum oportet qui super se est semper aspiciat, ut ejus metu qui supra omnia est crescentem intrinsecus animi tumorem premat.
21. 凡治理他人者，當常留心自己乃在神之下。——那思念將要來臨之審判者的人，便不住地日復一日將自己算帳的緣由改善預備；那以戰兢之心仰望永恆之主的人，便被驅使在轄下之人身上節制那屬世的統治之權。因為他清楚看見：暫時居於眾人之上算不得什麼，既然他自己也要向那無窮盡地掌權者交帳。因為屬世的權柄常藉自高的懸崖攫住人心。又因為各人自高的程度，正是他看自己高於別人的程度，所以他必須常仰望那高於自己的一位，好叫他藉著對那超乎萬有者的敬畏，壓制內心滋長的自高。
21. Let those who are set over others ever heed that they themselves are under God. — He who thinks upon the Judge who is to come, unceasingly, day by day, prepares the causes of his own reckonings for the better; he who beholds the eternal Lord with trembling of heart is constrained to temper the rights of temporal lordship over those subject to him. For he well perceives that it is nothing to be temporally set over others, when he himself is subject, to render an account, to Him who reigns without end. For often transitory power snatches the mind through the precipices of elation. And because each one is exalted to the degree that he sees himself to be above others, it behoves him always to look upon Him who is above himself, so that by the fear of Him who is above all things he may press down the swelling of mind growing within.

Unde beatus Job, quia ejus judicium qui super omnia est metuit, hic ad temporale judicium famulis aequalis venit, dicens: Si contempsi judicium subire cum servo meo et ancilla mea, cum disceptarent advertum me. Quid enim faciam cum surrexerit ad judicandum Deus ? et cum quesierit, quid respondebo illi ? Qui ut semper cor in humilitate deprimat, nequaquam in eisdem famulis conspicit, quod sibi status est diapar, sed quod natura communis. Unde etiam subdit:
因為讓他察看那些在他之下的人，卻更當思量他自己是在誰之下，好叫那虛假統治的膨脹，因著對真主宰的思量而減退。因此蒙福的約伯，因為敬畏那超乎萬有者的審判，便在此與自己的僕人平等地前來受屬世的審判，說：「我的僕婢與我爭辯的時候，我若藐視不肯與他們一同受審。神興起，我怎樣行呢？他察問，我怎樣回答呢？」他為要常使自己的心存於謙卑，絕不在那些僕人身上看見自己的地位與他們不同，乃看見本性乃是共通的。因此他又補充說：
For let him behold those who are under himself, but let him consider under whom he himself is, so that from the consideration of the true Lord the swelling of false lordship may decrease. Whence blessed Job, because he feared the judgement of Him who is above all things, here came, equal to his servants, to a temporal judgement, saying: 'If I have despised to abide judgement with my man-servant and my maid-servant, when they contended against me. For what shall I do when God shall rise up to judge? And when He shall question, what shall I answer Him?' He who, that he may ever keep his heart low in humility, by no means beholds in those same servants that his estate is unequal to theirs, but that their nature is common. Whence also he adds:
