Qui iniquo potenti adhaerent, ejus potentia tument. — Quia arvina pinguedo carnis est, et latera dicere divitum solemus hos quos eis conjunctos cer- nimus, arvina de ejus lateribus dependet, quia quis- quis potenti et iniquo adhaeret, ipse quoque de ejus potentia, velut ex pinguedine rerum, tumet, ut, pa- troni perversi iniquitatem sequens, Deum non timeat, quos valet, et quantum valet, 412 pauperes affligat, de gloria temporali cor elevet. Ibid.—And fat hangs down from his flanks. 51. They who cleave to the powerful wicked man swell with his power.—Since fat is the fatness of flesh, and we are accustomed to call flanks of the rich those whom we perceive to be joined to them, fat hangs down from his flanks, because whoever cleaves to the powerful and wicked man himself also swells from that man's power, as though from the fatness of things—so that, following the iniquity of his perverse patron, he does not fear God; he afflicts the poor whom he can, and as much as he can; he lifts up his heart with temporal glory. When, therefore, such is he who cleaves to the powerful wicked man, assuredly fat hangs down from that man's flank. Concerning whom it is still further added:
