21. Sola temporalia lucra quærunt. — Arbor namque juniperi pro foliis punctiones babeL. Sic quippe sunt birsula quae profert, ut spinis similia contrectantem pungere valeant. Spina vero est omne peccatum, quia dum trahit ad delectationem, quasi pungendo lacerat mentem. Unde justi voce et poenitentis dicitur: Conversus sum in aerumna mea dum confringitar spina (Psal. XIII, 4), quia scilicet mens ad lamentum vertitur, ut peccati punctio poenitendo frangatur. In translatione vero alia non confringi, sed configi spina perhibetur, quod videlicet ab eodem sensu non dissonat, quia poenitentis animus ad inctum ducitur, dum perpetrata culpa in memoria fixa retinetur [Vet. Xl.

21. They seek only temporal gains. — For the juniper tree has prickings in place of leaves. For the things it puts forth are so bristly that, like thorns, they can prick the one who handles them. Now a thorn is every sin, because while it draws to delight, it as it were lacerates the mind by pricking. Hence by the voice of the just and penitent it is said: 'I was turned in my anguish while the thorn is broken' (Ps. 32:4, Vulg.), because, namely, the mind is turned to lamentation, so that the pricking of sin may be broken by penitence. But in another translation the thorn is said not to be broken, but to be fixed in—which indeed dissents not from the same sense, because the soul of the penitent is led to mourning, while the perpetrated fault is retained fixed in the memory.

Quid, ergo per radicem junipcri nisi avaritia designatur, ex qua peccatorum omnium spinae producuntur? De qua per Paululn dicitur: Radix omnium malorum est cupiditas (1 Tim. VI, 10). Ipsa quippe latenter oritur in mente, sed punctiones peccatorum omnium patenter producit in opere. Quas videlicet punctiones ab hac radice surgentes, statim prædicator egregius insinuat, cum subdit: Quam quidum appetentes erraverunt a fide, et inseruerunt se doloribus multis (Ibid., 10). Qui enim multos dolores dixit, quasi nascentes inn otuit ex hac radice punctiones. In junippris ergo peccata, in radice vero juniperorum quid aliud quam avaritiam, id est, materiam intelligimus peccatorum?

What, then, is designated by the root of the juniper, but avarice, from which the thorns of all sins are produced? Concerning which it is said through Paul: 'Covetousness is the root of all evils' (1 Tim. 6:10). For it indeed springs up secretly in the mind, but openly produces in the work the prickings of all sins. Which prickings, rising from this root, the excellent preacher forthwith intimates, when he adds: 'Which some coveting have erred from the faith, and have entangled themselves in many sorrows' (1 Tim. 6:10). For he who spoke of many sorrows, made known, as it were, the prickings arising from this root. In the junipers, therefore, we understand sins; but in the root of the junipers, what else but avarice, that is, the matter of sins?

Quia igitur plerumque haeretici sola in verbis suis exteriora lucra sectantur, nec ignorant quia perversa astruunt,sed erroris praedicamenta non deserunt, dum sumptus percipero a quasi doctorum volunt, bene de eis sałncti viri nunc voce dicitur: Et radic.juniperorum erat cibus eorum. quia dum totis mentis suae sensihus avaritiam cogitant, quasi eo alimento vescuntur, de quo nasci procul dubio peccatorum sequentium punctiones solent. Qui si quando in sacro eloquio quaedam quasi prudenter inveniunt, quae dum non intełligunt, pro suis esse assertionibus suspicantur, mox miseris auditoribus suis, quorum non animas, sed substantias appetunt, hæc vociferantes aspergunt. Unde congrue subinfertur:
因此，異端既多半在言語中只追求外表的利益，也並非不知自己所建立的是悖謬之事，卻不肯離棄錯謬的教條，同時想像從教師那樣領受供養，如今藉聖者的口就正確地論到他們說：『杜松的根成了他們的食物』，因為他們既以心思一切的感官思念貪婪，就彷彿以那食物為食——從那食物無疑常生出隨後之罪的刺痛。這些人若有時在聖言中找到某些彷彿精明的話語，這些話他們雖不領悟，卻臆測是支持他們自己的主張，便隨即高聲叫嚷，將這些撒在他們可憐的聽眾身上——他們所貪圖的不是聽眾的靈魂，而是他們的財物。因此恰當地接著說：
Because, therefore, heretics for the most part pursue in their words only outward gains, and are not ignorant that they are building up perverse things, yet do not forsake the tenets of error, while they wish to receive support as though from teachers, it is well said of them now by the voice of the holy man: 'And the root of the junipers was their food,' because while with all the senses of their mind they think upon avarice, they as it were feed on that nourishment from which the prickings of the sins that follow are wont without doubt to be born. Who, if ever in the sacred discourse they find certain things as though prudently, which, while they do not understand, they suspect to be in support of their own assertions, they forthwith, vociferating, sprinkle these upon their wretched hearers, whose souls, not substances, they covet. Hence fittingly it is subjoined:
