61. Ecclesiæ liberari postulantis oratio non continuo exauditur. Qua ratione. — Sancta quippe Ecclesia persecutionis suae tempore fide stat, desideriis clamat. Sed dolet se quasi non respici, dum sua videt in tribulationibus VOla differri. Alto namque consilio omnipotens Deus, cum saucli ejus adversariorum persecutionibus comprimuntur, eumque assiduis ut liberentur interpellationibus clamant, differre solct voces petentium, ut merita patientium crescant, quatenus eo magis exaudiantur ad meritum, quo citius non exaudiuntur ad votum. Unde alias scriptum est: Deus meus, clamabo per diem, nec exaudies, et nocte (Psal. XXI, 5).
六十一、教會求脫離的禱告並非立刻蒙垂聽。其理由何在。——因為聖教會在受逼迫之時，憑信心站立，藉渴望呼求。但當她看見自己在患難中的願望被延遲時，便憂傷，彷彿不被眷顧。因為全能的神以深遠的旨意，當祂的眾聖徒被仇敵的逼迫所壓制、以不住的懇求呼喊求得拯救時，往往延遲那求告者的聲音，好叫受苦者的功勞增添——如此，他們所求的心願愈快不蒙垂聽，他們的功勞就愈得垂聽。因此別處記著說：「我的神啊，我白日呼求，你不應允，夜間呼求」（詩二十二2）。
61. The prayer of the Church seeking to be delivered is not immediately heard. For what reason. — For holy Church, in the time of her persecution, stands by faith and cries out by her desires. But she grieves as though she were not regarded, while she sees her vows in tribulations deferred. For by a deep counsel Almighty God, when His saints are pressed by the persecutions of their adversaries, and cry out with unceasing entreaties that they may be delivered, is wont to defer the voices of those who ask, that the merits of those who suffer may increase — so that they may be the more heard as to their merit the sooner they are not heard as to their wish. Whence it is written elsewhere: My God, I will cry by day, and Thou wilt not hear; and in the night (Ps. XXI, 5).

Atque ipsa utilitas de exaudiendi mora mox subditur, cum illic protinus subinfertur: Et non ad insipientiammihi (Ibid.). Ad multiplicandam quippe sanctorum sapientiam proficit quod postulata tarde percipiunt, ut ex dilatione creseat desiderium, ex desiderio intellectus augeatur. Intellectus vero cum intenditur, ejus in Deum ardentior affectus aperitur. Affectus autem ad promerenda eœlestia tanto fit capax, quanto fuerit exspectando longaoimis. Sed tamen inter haee sanctorum patientiam dolor urget ad vocem, et com dilati proficiunt, metuunt ne deficientibus viribus despecti reprobentur. Sequitur:
而蒙垂聽被延遲的益處隨即加上，因為緊接著補述說：「並不是我的愚昧」（同上）。因為聖徒遲遲才得所求，這正有助於增添他們的智慧，好叫渴望從延遲中生長，理解力從渴望中增添。而當理解力被激發時，其中就向神開啟一種更熱切的情感。這情感愈是在等候中恆久忍耐，就愈能配得屬天之事。然而在這一切之中，憂傷催逼聖徒的忍耐發出呼喊；當他們被延遲而藉此得益時，卻懼怕自己的力量衰竭，以致被輕看、被棄絕。接著說：
And the very profit of the delay in being heard is presently added, when there is immediately subjoined: And not unto foolishness for me (Ibid.). For it avails to multiply the wisdom of the saints that they receive their petitions late, so that from the delay desire may grow, and from desire understanding may be increased. But when the understanding is intensified, a more ardent affection toward God is opened within it. And the affection becomes capable of meriting heavenly things in proportion as it has been long-suffering in its waiting. Yet amid all this, grief urges the patience of the saints to a cry, and, as they are deferred and profit thereby, they fear lest, their strength failing, they be despised and reprobated.
