VERS. 20. — Ne protrahas noctem, ut ascendant populi pro eia. 77. Nox Ecclesiæ eat, cum doctorum et fortium loca indocti ac debiles obtinent. — Ac si aperte arrogantes dicant: Ignorantiæ tuae obscurilale non agas, ut in loco fortium numerositatem subroges infirmorum. Populi quippe nomine designantur, qui quasi vulgari consuetudini dediti, in cunctis quæ appetunt passim vivunt. Noctem vero protrahere est ut pro robustis populi ascendant, si per negligentiam agitur ut doctorum et fortium loca indocti ac debiles sortiantur. Populi pro robustis ascendunt quando hi qui vivere inique didiceront pastorum loca percipiunt. Quod recte quidem dici poterat si humiliter diceretur.
第二十節。——「不要拖長黑夜，以致眾民在他們的地位上起來。」77. 當無知軟弱之人佔據有學問剛強之人的地位時，那便是教會的黑夜。——彷彿自大者公然地說：「不要藉你無知的黑暗行事，以致你在剛強者的地位上安置大批軟弱之人。」以「眾民」為名所指的，是那些彷彿委身於庸俗習性的人，他們在所貪求的一切事上放縱而活。拖長黑夜，就是使眾民起來取代剛強者，即：若因疏忽以致無知軟弱者抽籤得了有學問剛強者的地位。當那些學會邪惡度日的人得了牧者的地位時，眾民便取代剛強者而起來。這話若以謙卑說出，本可正當地說。
Verse 20. — 'Do not prolong the night, that peoples may rise up in their place.' 77. It is night for the Church, when the unlearned and weak occupy the places of the learned and strong. — As if the arrogant were openly to say: 'Do not act through the darkness of your ignorance, so that in the place of the strong you substitute a great number of the weak.' By the name of 'peoples' are designated those who, as it were given over to vulgar custom, live at large in all the things they crave. To prolong the night is that peoples rise up in place of the strong, if through negligence it comes about that the unlearned and weak obtain by lot the places of the learned and strong. Peoples rise up in place of the strong when those who have learned to live wickedly receive the places of shepherds. This indeed could rightly have been said, if it had been said humbly.

Arrogantes enim, etiam cum bona admonent, superstitionis suae vitium exercent. Nam plus, sicut et superius dictum est, increpando ferire appetunt d quam consolando refovere. Unde mox subjungitur: VERS. it. — e Ne declines ad iniquitatem; hanc enim cæpisti aequi post miseriam. Hoc profecto arrogantes Ecclesiae miseriam vocant, quod despectam Deo ejus multitudinem suspicantur; et eo illam altiori elatione contemuunt, quo et despectam Deo funditus suspicantur. His igitur figurataexposilionetranscursis, jam nunc inferenda sunt quae moraliter sentiuntur, ut ligura Ecclesiæ cognita, quam expressam generaliter credimus, audialuus etiam quid ex his verbis in singulis specialiter colLgamus.

For the arrogant, even when they admonish good things, exercise the vice of their superstition. For, as was also said above, they seek rather to strike by rebuking than to cherish by consoling. Whence there is soon subjoined: Verse 21. — 'Do not turn aside to iniquity; for this you have begun to follow after your misery.' This indeed the arrogant call the misery of the Church, that they suspect her multitude to be despised by God; and they despise her with the loftier elation, the more they suspect her to be utterly despised by God. Having therefore run through these things by a figurative exposition, we must now bring forward those things which are perceived morally, so that, the figure of the Church being known — which we believe to be expressed generally — we may hear also what from these words we may gather specially in individuals.
