313:1
I bid.— Et terrores Domini militant contra me. 6. Deum praesentes poenas dolent, pavent futuras. Hinc Psalmista ait: In me pertransierunt irae tuae, et terrores tui conturbaverunt me ( Psal. lxxxvii, 17).
Ibid.—And the terrors of the Lord war against me (Job 6:4). 6. They grieve at present punishments, they dread future ones.—The mind of the just not only ponders what it endures, but also dreads what remains; it sees what things it suffers in this life; it fears lest after this it suffer graver things. It mourns because in the exile of this blindness it has fallen from the joys of paradise; it fears lest, when exile is left behind, eternal death should follow. Now therefore it endures the sentence in punishment; but it still dreads from its fault the threats of the Judge to come. Hence the Psalmist says: 'Thy wraths have passed over me, and thy terrors have troubled me' (Ps. 87:17).
313:2
Interni quippe ju licis postquam iraepertranseunt, etiam terrores conturbant, quia jam aliud de dam- natione patimur, et adhuc aliud de aeterna ultione formidamus. Vir igitur sanctus, perpendens mala quae tolerat, dicat: Sagittae Domini in me sunt, qua- rum indignatio ebibit spiritum meum. Sed, graviora in perpetuum metuens, adjungat: Et terrores militam contra me. Ac si aperte diceret: Percussus quidem de praesentibus doleo; 215 sed hoc in dolore fit gravius, quia et in poena positus, adhuc supplicia aeterna pertimesco. Sed quia jam staterae interven- tum desiderat, jam mala in quibus humanum genus cecidit pensat, quamvis in gentili natione positus, munere tamen prophetici spiritus plenus;
因為當那內在審判者的烈怒漫過之後,祂的驚嚇也攪擾人,因為我們如今一面因定罪受苦,一面仍為永遠的報應懼怕。故此,願這聖人衡量他所忍受的諸惡,說:「全能者的箭在我身上,這箭的忿怒喝盡了我的靈。」但因永遠懼怕更沉重之事,願他補充說:「並且驚嚇擺陣攻擊我。」彷彿他公開地說:我被擊打,確實為現今之事憂傷;但這在憂傷中更加沉重,因為即使已置於刑罰之中,我仍極懼怕永遠的折磨。但因他如今渴望天平的介入,如今衡量人類所墜入的諸惡,他雖置身於外邦民族之中,卻滿有先知之靈的恩賜;
For after the wraths of the inward Judge pass over, His terrors also trouble, because we now suffer one thing from condemnation, and still dread another from eternal vengeance. Let the holy man therefore, weighing the evils he endures, say: 'The arrows of the Lord are in me, the indignation whereof drinketh up my spirit.' But, fearing graver things forever, let him add: 'And the terrors war against me.' As if he openly said: Being struck, I grieve indeed at present things; but this becomes more grievous in grief, because, even set in punishment, I still greatly dread eternal torments. But because he now desires the intervention of the balance, now weighs the evils into which the human race has fallen, although set among the Gentile nation, yet full of the gift of the prophetic Spirit;
