I bid. — Affuit inter eos etiam Satan. 4. Satan inter angelos, quia naturam non amisit. — Valde quaerendum est quomodo inter electos angelos Satan adesse potuerit, qui ab eorum sorte, exigente superbia, dudum damnatus exivit. Sed recte inter eos adfuisse describitur, quia etsi beatitudinem perdidit, naturam tamen eis similem non amisit; et si meritis praegravatur, conditione naturae subtilis attollitur. In- ter Dei ergo filios coram Domino adfuisse dicitur; quia eo intuitu, quo omnipotens Deos cuncta spiri- talia conspicit, etiam Satan in ordine naturae subti- lioris videt, attestante Scriptura, quae dicit: Oculi Domini contemplantur malos et bonos ( Prov. xv, 3).

Satan among the angels, because he did not lose his nature. — It must be earnestly inquired how Satan could be present among the elect angels, he who long ago went out condemned from their company, as his pride demanded. But he is rightly described to have been present among them, because, although he lost blessedness, yet he did not lose a nature like theirs; and though he is weighed down by his deserts, he is exalted by the subtle condition of his nature. Among the sons of God, therefore, he is said to have been present before the Lord; because by that gaze with which the omnipotent God beholds all spiritual beings, He sees even Satan in the order of his subtler nature, as Scripture attests, which says: The eyes of the Lord behold the evil and the good (Prov. xv. 3).

93:2

Sed hoc, quod adfuisse Satan coram Domino dicitur, in gravi nobis quaestione versatur. Scriptum quippe est: Beati mundo corde, quoniam ipsi Deum videbunt ( Matth. v, 8). Satan vero, qui mundo corde esse non potest, a quomodo ad videndum Dominum adfuisse potest. 5. Deo adest, quia ao eo videtur. — Sed intuendum est quia adfuisse coram Domino, non autem Domi- num vidisse perhibetur. Venit quippe, ut videretur, non ut videret. Ipse in conspectu Domini, non au- tem in conspectu ejus Dominus fuit: sicut caecus cum in sole consistit, ipse quidem radiis solis perfun- ditur, sed tamen lumen non videt quo illustratur. Ita ergo etiam inter angelos in conspectu Domini Satan adfuit;

But this, that Satan is said to have been present before the Lord, involves us in a grave question. For it is written: Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God (Matt. v. 8). But Satan, who cannot be pure in heart, how can he have been present to see the Lord? 5. He is present to God, because he is seen by Him. — But it must be observed that he is reported to have been present before the Lord, not, however, to have seen the Lord. For he came to be seen, not to see. He himself was in the sight of the Lord, but the Lord was not in his sight: just as a blind man, when he stands in the sun, is himself indeed bathed in the rays of the sun, yet does not see the light by which he is illumined. So, then, Satan too was present in the sight of the Lord among the angels;

93:3

quia vis divina, quae intuendo penetrat omnia, non se videntem immundum spiritum vidit. Quia enim et ipsa, quae Deum fugiunt, latere non possunt, dum cuncta nuda sunt superno conspectui, Satan ad- fuit absens praesenti. Sequitur:

因為那藉觀看而洞徹萬物的神聖大能，看見了那看不見祂的污穢之靈。因為既然連那些躲避神的，也不能隱藏，而萬物在那至高者的目光前都是赤露的，撒但便如此呈現——雖同在於那位臨在者面前，卻仍是缺席的。接著說：

because the divine power, which by beholding penetrates all things, saw the unclean spirit that did not see it. For since even those things that flee from God cannot lie hidden, while all things are naked to the supernal gaze, Satan was present, absent to the Present One. There follows:
