229:1
V ers. 23.
Verse 23. — 'To a man whose way is hidden, and whom God hath surrounded with darkness.' 11. He who acts rightly knows not whether he will persevere. — For his way is hidden to a man, because although he already considers in what quality of life he is, yet he still knows not to what end he tends. Although he already longs for the things above, although he seeks these with full desires, yet he still knows not whether he may abide in those same desires. For, forsaking sins, we tend toward righteousness; and whence we came, we know; but whither we may arrive, we know not. What we were yesterday, we know; but what it may befall us to be tomorrow, we know not. His way, then, is hidden to a man, because he so sets the foot of his work that yet he cannot foresee the issue of its consummation.
229:2
IV. ] 12.
12. He knows not whether that which he thinks right, God may not condemn. He is surrounded with darkness. — But there is also another hiddenness of our way; because sometimes those very things which we believe ourselves to do rightly, whether in the stern examination of the Judge they be right, we know not. For often, as we said also far above, our work is a cause of damnation, and is thought to be an advance of virtue. Often, from that very source whence the Judge is believed to be appeased, He is provoked, though placid, to wrath; Solomon attesting, who says: 'There is a way which seemeth right to a man; but the ends thereof lead to death' (Prov. 14:12).
229:3
Whence holy men, when they overcome evils, dread even their own well-done deeds, lest, when they long to do good things, they be deceived by the appearance of the action, lest a pestilent decay of putrefaction lie hidden under the fair show of good colour. For they know that, still weighed down by the burden of corruption, they know not how subtly to judge good things; and when they bring before their eyes the rule of the final examination, they sometimes fear these very things in themselves, even those which they approve. And with their whole mind they indeed desire the inward things, yet, trembling at the uncertainty of their works, they know not whither they walk. Whence, well, after it was said: 'Why is light given to him that is in misery?' there is added: 'To a man whose way is hidden.' As if it were said:
229:4
Cur hujus vitae successus b accipit, qui sub qua sit aestimatione judicis iter sui operis nescit? Bene au- tem subditur: Et circumdedit eum Deus tenebris. Tenebris namque homo circumdatur; quia quamvis coelesti desiderio ferveat, quid de semetipso sit dispo- situm intrinsecus, ignorat. Et valde metuit, ne quid sibi in judicio obviet, quod se de se nunc in deside- rio boni fervoris latet. Tenebris homo circumdatur, quia ignorantiae suae caligine premitur. An tenebris circumdatus non est, qui plerumque praeteritorum non meminit, futura non invenit, praesentia vix co- gnoscit? Tenebris se circumdatum quidam sapiens viderat, cum dicebat: Quae in prospectu suns, c in- venimus cum labore;
他既不知自己工作的路程在審判者的評估下如何,為何領受今生的亨通呢?但補充得好:「神又用黑暗四面圍困他。」因為人被黑暗四面圍困;因他雖以屬天的渴慕火熱,卻不知自己內裡被命定如何。他大大懼怕,惟恐在審判時有某事臨到他,是他如今在善之火熱的渴慕中對自己所隱藏的。人被黑暗四面圍困,因他被自身無知的昏昧所壓。那大多不記得過去、尋不著未來、勉強知道現在的人,豈非被黑暗四面圍困麼?有一智者曾看見自己被黑暗四面圍困,說:「在眼前的事,我們尚且勞苦才能查明;
Why does he receive the success of this life, who knows not under what estimation of the Judge is the journey of his work? But well is it subjoined: 'And God hath surrounded him with darkness.' For man is surrounded with darkness; because although he glows with heavenly desire, what is disposed within concerning himself, he knows not. And he greatly fears lest something meet him in the judgement which now, in the desire of good fervour, lies hidden from him concerning himself. Man is surrounded with darkness, because he is pressed by the gloom of his own ignorance. Or is he not surrounded with darkness, who for the most part does not remember the past, does not discover the future, scarcely knows the present? A certain wise man had seen himself surrounded with darkness, when he said: 'The things that are in sight we find with labour;

et quae in coelis sunt, d quis investigabit ( Sap. ix, 16)? His se tenebris Propheta circumdatum vidit, cum dispositionis intimae pene- trare interna non potuit, dicens: Posuit tenebras latibulum suum ( Psal. xvii, 12). Auctor enim noster, quia nobis in hoc exsilium dejectis, lucem suae visio- nis abstulit, sese nostris oculis quasi in tenebrarum latibulo abscondit. 13. Hinc sanctis materia flendi. — Quas nimirum caecitatis nostrae tenebras cum studiose conspicimus, mentem ad lamenta provocamus. Flet enim caecita- tem quam foris patitur, si humiliter meminit quod in interioribus lumine privatur. Cumque tenebras, quibus circumdatur, respicit, splendoris intimi ar- denti se desiderio affligit;
至於天上的事,誰能查究呢?」(智慧篇九章16節)。先知也曾看見自己被這些幽暗四面圍困,因他不能洞悉那最內在旨意的內裡,說:「他以黑暗為藏身之處」(詩篇十八篇11節)。因為我們的創造者,因祂向被貶入這流放之地的我們奪去了祂顯現之光,便從我們眼前隱藏自己,彷彿藏於黑暗的隱密處。第十三。因此聖徒有哀哭的緣由。——當我們專心察看我們瞎眼的這幽暗時,便激動己心哀哭。因為人若謙卑地記念自己在內裡被奪去了光,便為自己在外所受的瞎眼哀哭。當他察看四面圍困自己的黑暗時,便以對最內在光輝的火熱渴慕苦待自己;
and the things that are in the heavens, who shall search out?' (Wisd. 9:16). With these shadows the Prophet saw himself surrounded, when he could not penetrate the inward parts of the innermost disposition, saying: 'He hath made darkness his hiding-place' (Ps. 17:12). For our Author, because to us cast down into this exile He took away the light of His vision, hid Himself from our eyes as it were in the hiding-place of darkness. 13. Hence there is matter for weeping to the saints. — Which shadows of our blindness, when we studiously behold, we provoke the mind to lamentations. For a man weeps for the blindness which he suffers outwardly, if he humbly remembers that in the inward parts he is deprived of light. And when he regards the darkness with which he is surrounded, he afflicts himself with an ardent desire of the inmost splendour;
229:6
omnique intentionis adnisu semetipsam concutit, et supernam lucem, quam con- dita deseruit, repulsa quaerit. Unde fit plerumque, ut in ipsis piis fletibus illa interni gaudii claritas erumpat; et mens, quae in torpore prius caeca jacue- rat, ad inspectionem fulgoris intimi suspiriis ve- getata convalescat. Unde bene sequitur:
and with every effort of intention he shakes himself, and, repulsed, seeks the supernal light which, when created, he forsook. Whence it comes to pass for the most part, that in those very pious weepings that brightness of inward joy breaks forth; and the mind, which before had lain blind in torpor, being quickened by sighs, grows strong unto the beholding of the inmost radiance. Whence, well, it follows:
