689:1
V ers. 17. — Halitum meum exhorruit uxor mea. 52. Christum exhorruit sponsa synagoga. — Quid uxor Domini nisi Synagoga accipitur, in legis foedere carnali ei intelligentia subjecta?
Verse 17. — 'My wife abhorred my breath.' 52. The synagogue, as bride, abhorred Christ. — What is understood by the wife of the Lord but the Synagogue, subjected to Him with carnal understanding in the covenant of the law? Now the breath is from the flesh. But the unbelieving people understood the flesh of the Lord carnally, because it believed Him to be a mere man. His breath, therefore, His wife abhorred, because the Synagogue was afraid to believe Him whom she saw a man to be God. And when she heard words bodily from His mouth, she refused to understand in Him the secrets of the divinity, and did not believe Him to be the Creator whom she saw a creature. The carnal wife, therefore, abhorred the breath of the flesh, because, given over to carnal senses, she did not acknowledge the mystery of His incarnation. There follows:
