V ers. 20. Confusi sunt, quia speravi. 46. Reprobos pudore afficit bonorum constantia. Cum bonis mala reprobi ingerunt, si hos a spe inti- ma labefactari conspiciunt, effectu deceptionis hila- rescunt. Lucrum namque maximum, erroris sui pro- pagationem deputant, quia habere se ad perditionem socios exsultant. Cum vero bonorum spes interius figitur, et nequaquam malis exterioribus ad ima re- clinatur, pravorum mentem confusio occupat, quia dum pervenire ad afflictorum intima nequeunt, in- cassum se existere crudeles erubescunt.
第二十節。「他們蒙羞，因為我懷有指望。」第四十六。善人的堅定使被棄者蒙羞。當被棄者把禍患加給善人時，若看見這些人從內心的盼望上被動搖，就因欺騙的效果而歡喜。因為他們把自己謬誤的擴散看為極大的收穫，因他們以有同伴一同沉淪而歡躍。但當善人的盼望固定於內，絲毫不因外在的禍患而俯向深淵時，混亂就抓住那敗壞者的心，因為他們既不能觸及受苦者的內心，就因自己身為殘忍者卻徒然存在而羞愧。
Verse 20. 'They were confounded, because I have hoped.' 46. The constancy of the good afflicts the reprobate with shame. When the reprobate bring evils upon the good, if they behold these to be shaken from their inmost hope, they grow glad at the effect of their deception. For they reckon the propagation of their own error to be a very great gain, since they exult to have companions unto perdition. But when the hope of the good is fixed within, and is in no way bent down to the depths by outward evils, confusion seizes the mind of the depraved, since, being unable to reach the inmost parts of the afflicted, they blush that they exist in vain as cruel men.

Sanctus igitur vir dicat ex voce sua, dicat ex universalis Ec- clesiae afflictae gementisque constantia, quae inter adversa reproborum supernae retributionis gaudium sine ullo mentis defectu desiderat, atque ad vitam moriendo perdurat: Confusi sunt, quia speravi. Ac si aperte dicat: Quia duris persecutionibus reprobi vim mei rigoris non emolliunt, erubescentes procul dubio laborem suae crudelitatis perdunt. Unde et mox venturae retributionis bona quasi jam praesen ia conspicit, et qui reatus in judicio d reprobos maneat attendit, subdens:

Let the holy man, therefore, say with his own voice, let him say from the constancy of the universal Church, afflicted and groaning—the Church which amid the adversities of the reprobate desires, without any failing of mind, the joy of the heavenly recompense, and by dying endures unto life: 'They were confounded, because I have hoped.' As if he plainly said: 'Because by harsh persecutions the reprobate do not soften the force of my firmness, blushing they doubtless lose the labour of their cruelty.' Whence also he presently beholds the good things of the recompense to come as though already present, and observes what guilt awaits the reprobate in the judgment, adding:
