40. Through the coming of the Mediator light is scattered abroad. For He Himself is the Way, who says: 'I am the way, the truth, and the life' (John 14:6). Through this Way, then, light is scattered abroad, because through His presence all the Gentile world is illumined. And He fittingly said 'is scattered abroad,' because through the voices of the apostles the light of preaching, not narrowed and confined, but shining far and wide, flashed forth. But because, once the light of conversion is received, the force of love blazes within, so that either past evils may be anxiously bewailed, or good things to come may be most ardently sought, it is suitably added:
