969:1
45. Iniquorum irrisionibus non dejicitur sed erigitur et crescit Ecclesia. — Longe a sancta Ecclesia fugiunt omnes iniqui non passibus gressuum,sed qualitatibus morum; I longe fugiunt non loco, sed merito; dum, crescente superbia, aperta eam exprobralione contemnunt. Faciem namque ejus conspuere est non tantum in absentia bonis detrahere, sed unumquemque justum etiam in præsentia confutare. Quos tunc pravi dum aperte irridendo despiciunt, in torum contumeliis fluxa verba quasi defluentes salivas emittunt. [Vet. XIX.] Sed scit sancta Ecclesia in passionibus crescere, atque inter opprobria honorabilem vitam tenere; scit nec de adverbia v dejici, nec de prosperis gloriari;
四十五。教會不因不義之人的嘲笑而被打倒,反倒被高舉、增長。——一切不義之人都遠遠逃離聖教會,不是憑腳步的行走,而是憑習性的品質;他們遠遠逃離,不是在地方上,而是在功德上;當驕傲增長時,他們以公然的辱罵藐視她。因為向她臉上吐唾沫,不僅是在善人不在時毀謗他們,更是當面駁斥每一個義人。當敗壞之人公然嘲笑而藐視他們時,就在辱罵之中,向他們吐出如流涎般鬆散的言語。但聖教會曉得如何在苦難中增長,並在羞辱之中持守尊貴的生命;她曉得既不因逆境而被打倒,也不因順境而誇口;
45. By the mockeries of the wicked the Church is not cast down, but is raised up and grows. — All the wicked flee far from the holy Church, not by the steps of their feet, but by the qualities of their habits; they flee far, not in place, but in merit; while, as pride increases, they despise her with open upbraiding. For to spit in her face is not only to disparage the good in their absence, but to confute every just man even to his face. When the depraved despise them by openly mocking, they cast forth upon them, amid insults, loose words like slavering spittle. But the holy Church knows how to grow in sufferings, and amid reproaches to hold an honourable life; she knows neither to be cast down by adversity, nor to glory in prosperity;
969:2
novit contra prospera mentem suam iv dejectione sternere, nova contra adversa animum ad spem superui cuimiois exaltare; scit bona sua misericordiae Redemptoris, scit mala sua justitiae tribuere judicis; quod et bona illo !argiente babeat, et mala illo permittente patiatur. Unde et mox de Domino subjungit, dicens:
she knows how to lay her mind low in dejection against prosperity, and to exalt her spirit anew to the hope of the highest summit against adversity; she knows how to attribute her good things to the mercy of the Redeemer, and her evil things to the justice of the Judge—that she both has the good by his bestowing, and suffers the evil by his permitting. Whence also she straightway subjoins concerning the Lord, saying:
