517. V ers. 11. — Vestigia ejus secutus est pes meus. 41. Dei longanimitas et pietas nobis unitandae. Exempla Christi sequenda. — Quasi quidam namque gressus Dei sunt, quas cernimus, b operationes ejus, quibus bonus quisque malusque regitur, quibus justi injustique suis c ordinibus disponuntur, quibus et subjectus quisque ad meliora quotidie ducitur, et adversus ad deteriora corruens toleratur. De quibus nimirum gressibus Propheta dicebat: Visi sunt gressus tui, Deus ( Psal. lxvii, 25). Nos itaque cum virtutem longanimitatis atque pietatis ejus intuemur, et intuentes imitari contendimus, quid aliud quam gressuum ejus vestigia sequimur, d quia extrema quaedam ejus operationis imitamur.

517. Verse 11. — My foot has followed His footsteps. 41. God's long-suffering and mercy are to be imitated by us. The examples of Christ are to be followed. — For as it were certain steps of God are those operations of His which we behold, by which every good and every wicked man is ruled, by which the righteous and the unrighteous are disposed in their own orders, by which every subject is daily led to better things, and the adversary, falling headlong toward worse things, is tolerated. Of which steps the Prophet said: Thy steps were seen, O God (Ps. 67:24). We therefore, when we behold the virtue of His long-suffering and mercy, and beholding it strive to imitate it, what else do we but follow the footsteps of His steps, since we imitate certain outermost things of His operation?

Haec enim Patris sui vestigia Veritas admonebat imitari, cum diceret: Orate pro persequentibus et calumniantibas vos, ut sitis filii Patris vestri, qui in coelis est, qui solem suum oriri facit e super malos et bonos ( Matth. v, 45, Luc. vi, 28).[ Vet. XVII.] Potest tamen beatus Job, qui certa fide jam dixerat: Scio quod Redemptor meus vivit, et in novissimo die de terra surrecturus sum ( Job. xix, 25), sic in futura operatione incar- nandae sapien iae intendere, sicut nos ejusdem sapien- tiae jam praeterita opera per fidem videmus, quod Mediator Dei et hominum benignus ad tribuendum, humilis ad sustinendum, patiens ad exemplum prae- bendum fuerit.

For these footsteps of His Father the Truth admonished us to imitate, when He said: Pray for them that persecute and calumniate you, that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven, who makes His sun to rise upon the evil and the good (Matt. 5:44-45; Luke 6:28). [Old Reading, chapter 17.] Yet blessed Job, who with sure faith had already said: I know that my Redeemer lives, and in the last day I shall rise up out of the earth (Job 19:25), can so fix his gaze upon the future working of the Wisdom that was to be incarnate, as we now behold by faith the already-past works of that same Wisdom — namely, that the Mediator of God and men was kind in giving, humble in enduring, patient in affording an example.

Cujus nimirum vitam dum beatus Job, superno spiritu repletus, sollicita intentione conspi- ceret, futuram mansuetudinis illius humilitatem prae- videns, quasi ad exemplum sibi propositum recurrit, ut quidquid in hac vita ageret, ad imitationis illius vestigia ligaret, quatenus qui occultae dispositionis ejus sublimia videre non poterat, quasi in terra con- spiciens, ad imitationem ejus vestigia teneret. De quibus ejus vestigiis per Petrum dictur: Christus passus est pro nobis, vobis relinquens exemplum, ut sequamini vestigia ejus ( I Petr. ii, 21). De quo adhuc subditur:

While blessed Job, filled with the heavenly Spirit, beheld His life with solicitous intention, foreseeing the future humility of His meekness, he ran back, as it were, to an example set before himself, so that whatever he did in this life he might bind to the footsteps of that imitation; to the end that he who could not see the sublime things of His hidden disposition, beholding them as it were on earth, might keep the footsteps unto His imitation. Of which footsteps of His it is said through Peter: Christ suffered for us, leaving you an example, that you should follow His footsteps (1 Pet. 2:21). Concerning whom it is still subjoined:
