Since, with many cares pressing upon me, it has not been permitted to search through the whole book of the prophet Ezekiel in order before your charity, it has pleased your good desires to ask that at least his final vision, which was made to him concerning the building set upon the mountain, and which is more obscure than all his visions, ought to be expounded. And indeed it is necessary for me to obey your will, but there are two things which in this matter perturb my mind. The one, that this same vision is covered with clouds of so great obscurity, that scarcely anything is seen in it through the light of understanding shining through. The other, that we have now learned that Agilulf, king of the Lombards, hastening with all his might to our siege, has crossed the Po.

Deprimit terrena inhabitatio sensum multa cogitantem (Sap, IX, !5). Quae enim superiora penetrare etiam collecta non sufficit, pensate quid agere poterit divisa ? Scimus autem, scimus omnes, quia et Huvius qui In multis rivis dividitur, a suo alveo exsiccatur. Sed tamen inter haec adest superna gratia.
所以，最親愛的弟兄們，你們想想：一個被自己懼怕的攪擾所佔據的可憐心思，在幽暗奧祕的意義中能穿透甚麼呢。因為它越為屬地之事憂苦，就越少看見屬天之事；因為它被自己的憂慮引到自身之外，在裡面就大大地縮減了，因為經上記著說：「屬地的居所壓下那思慮萬事的心」（智慧書九15）。因為那即或聚集起來也不足以穿透更高之事的，你們想想它一旦分散，還能作甚麼呢。然而我們知道，我們都知道，就連一條分成許多支流的河，也要在自己的河床中乾涸。但縱然在這些事中，那從上而來的恩典仍然臨在。
Whence weigh, most dear brethren, what a wretched mind, occupied by the perturbations of its own fear, is able to penetrate amid dark and mystical senses. For the more it is anguished about earthly things, the less it sees in those things which are heavenly; and because it is led outside itself by its cares, it is very much diminished within, because, as it is written, 'The earthly habitation presseth down the mind that museth upon many things' (Wisd. 9:15). For that which, even when collected, does not suffice to penetrate higher things, weigh what it will be able to do when divided. But we know, we all know, that even a river which is divided into many streams is dried up from its channel. Yet nevertheless amid these things the supernal grace is present.

And if the weights of my thoughts press down my mind, the wings of your desires lift it up. Very obscure indeed is the work which we approach, but let us lay it up in mind that we are making a nocturnal journey. It remains therefore that we pluck this by groping.
