V ers. 13. — Ipsi fuerunt rebelles lumini. 70. Divinum lumen respuentium poena caecitas. — Plerumque perversi et cognoscunt recta quae sequi debeant, et tamen sequi despiciunt quae cognoscunt. Lumini ergo rebelles sunt, quia, sua desideria se- quendo, bonum despiciunt quod noverunt. Qui ergo non per ignorantiam, sed per superbiam delinquunt, elationis suae scutum jaculis veritatis objiciunt, ne salubriter in corde feria(??) tur. Ex qua videlicet eorum superbia agitur ut quia nolunt facere quae cognoscunt, nec cognoscant jam bona quae faciant, sed sua eos caecitas a veritatis lumine funditus excludat. Unde et apte subditur:
Verse 13. — They themselves were rebels against the light. 70. The punishment of those who spurn the divine light is blindness. — Very often the perverse both know the right things which they ought to follow, and yet despise to follow what they know. They are rebels, therefore, against the light, because, following their own desires, they despise the good which they have come to know. Those, then, who offend not through ignorance but through pride, oppose the shield of their exaltation to the darts of truth, lest they be salutarily struck in the heart. From this pride of theirs it comes about that, because they will not do the things they know, they no longer even know the good things they might do, but their own blindness utterly shuts them out from the light of truth. Whence it is also aptly subjoined:
第十三節——他們自己就是背叛光的人。七十、拒斥神聖之光者的刑罰乃是瞎眼。——邪僻的人往往既知曉當遵循的正道，卻又輕看不肯遵循他們所知的。所以他們是背叛光的人，因為他們隨從自己的私慾，輕看所認識的善。那麼凡不是因無知、乃是因驕傲而犯罪的人，便以自高的盾牌抵擋真理的箭，免得心受救恩性的擊打。正是因他們這驕傲，便招致這樣的結果：因他們不肯行所知的，就連可行的善也不再知曉，反倒他們自己的瞎眼把他們從真理之光中徹底摒除。因此也恰當地補上：
