20. Mira Job in tanta vitœinnocentia humilitas. — Qui enim judicari cum servis ancillisque non renuit, liquido indicat quod contra nullum unquam proximum apud se tumidus fuit. Inter hæc autem libet intueri, vitam suam in omnibus quanta vir sanctus discretione custodivit. Non enim longe superius dixit: Videbant me juvenes, et abscondebantur, et senes assurgentes stabant; principes cessabant loqui, et digitum superponebant ori suo; vocem suamcohibebant duces, et lingua eorumgutturi suo adhœrebat. (Reg. X.l Nunc vero ait: Si contempsi judicium subire cum servo meo et ancilla mea, curn 689 disceplarent adversum me.
20. Job's wondrous humility amid such innocence of life. — For he who refuses not to be judged together with his men-servants and maid-servants, clearly indicates that he was never puffed up in his own esteem against any neighbour. Meanwhile it is fitting to behold with how great discretion the holy man guarded his life in all things. For not far above he said: 'The young men saw me, and hid themselves, and the old men rose up and stood; the princes ceased to speak, and laid their finger upon their mouth; the leaders held their voice, and their tongue clave to their throat' (Job 29). But now he says: 'If I have despised to abide judgement with my man-servant and my maid-servant, when they contended against me.'

Quis digne considerare valeat hujus viri tam sublimia virtutum moderamina In quo tanta est auctoritas regiminis, ut ad silentium restringantur duces: tanta humilitas cordis, ut ex aequo ad judicium venire permittantur ancillæ. Ecce apparet miro modo in potestate principibus i polior, in certamine servis æqualis; in coetu principum memor regiminis, in certamine famulorum memor conditionis. Se quippe sub vero domino famulum conspicit, ideoque cordis altitudine se super famulos non extollit, Unde et protinus suhdit:
Who could worthily consider the so lofty governings of this man's virtues? In whom there was so great authority of rule, that leaders were restrained to silence; and so great humility of heart, that his maid-servants were permitted to come to judgement on equal terms. Behold, he appears in a wondrous manner mightier than princes in power, equal to servants in contention; mindful of rule in the assembly of princes, mindful of his condition in the strife of his servants. For he beholds himself a servant under the true Lord, and therefore he does not exalt himself in loftiness of heart above his servants. Whence also he straightway adds:
誰能配得地思量這人諸德之如此崇高的節制？在他裡面有如此大的治理權柄，以致連首領也被約束而靜默；又有如此大的心靈謙卑，以致他的婢女得以平等地前來受審。看哪，他以奇妙的方式顯出：在權柄上比王子更有能力，在爭辯中卻與僕人平等；在王子的會集中不忘治理之責，在僕人的爭訟中卻不忘自己的本分。因為他看自己乃是在真主宰之下的僕人，所以他不在心靈的高處自高於他的僕人。因此他隨即補充說：
