Moralia in Job 394

Verse 20. God will not cast away the simple, nor reach out His hand to the malignant: 87. On account of good deeds not done with a good intention, and on account of guiles. Because indeed, appearing strict in judgment, He will both lift up the despising of the simple by glorifying it, and shatter the glory of the malignant by reproving it. For hypocrites are called malignant, who do good deeds not well, and work all that is upright under the zeal of praise. But the hand to which we reach out, him surely we lift up from the depths. To the malignant therefore God does not reach out His hand, because those who seek earthly glory He leaves in the depths, and however upright the things they do may seem, He does not advance them to the joys on high.

Or certainly, for this reason hypocrites are called malignant, because they display kindness toward their neighbours, and cloak the guiles of their iniquity. For in all that they either do or speak, they exhibit simplicity outwardly, but inwardly they are cunning with the subtlety of duplicity; they feign purity on the surface, but always conceal malice under the appearance of purity. Against whom it is well said through Moses: Thou shalt not put on a garment woven of wool and linen (Deut. 22:11-12). For by wool is designated simplicity, but by linen subtlety. And indeed a garment that is made of wool and linen conceals the linen within, and displays the wool on the surface.

He therefore puts on a garment woven of wool and linen who, in the speech or action which he employs, conceals the subtlety of malice within, and displays the simplicity of innocence without. For because craftiness cannot be caught under the image of purity, the linen lurks, as it were, beneath the coarseness of the wool. But well, after the reproof of the double-hearted, is the recompense of the just set forth, when it is at once subjoined:
