54. Iniqui alterna se invicem defensione tuentur. Istæ squamæ peccantium, ne ab pre prædicantium aliquo vile spiraculo penetrentur, et obduratæ auDi et conjunctæ.. Quoe enim similis reatus sociat, evacordi pertinacia etiam defensio perversa constipat, ut de facinoribus suis alterna se invicem defensione tueantur. Sibi enim quisque metuil, dum admoneri vel corrigi alterum cernit; et idcirco contra corripientium verba unanimiter aasuflit, quia se ill altero protegit. Bene ergo dicitur: Una uni conjungitur, et ne spiraculum quidem incedit per eat quia in iDiquitatibus suis, dum vicissim suPerba se defensione protegunt, sanctæ exhortationis spiracula ad se auilatenus intrare permittunt.
54. The wicked defend one another by mutual protection. — These scales of sinners are so hardened and joined together, that they cannot be pierced by any slender breath of preachers. For those whom a like guilt associates, a perverse defence also crams tight together in stubbornness of heart, so that by mutual defence they protect one another concerning their crimes. For each fears for himself when he sees another admonished or corrected; and therefore against the words of those who rebuke they rise up with one accord, because each shelters himself in the other. Well then is it said: 'One is joined to another, and not even a breath can pass through them' (Job XLI, 8); because in their iniquities, while by proud defence they protect one another in turn, they in no way permit the breathings of holy exhortation to enter into them.
五十四、惡人彼此以相互的辯護庇護。——罪人的這些鱗甲是如此堅硬、彼此緊接,以致傳道者的任何細微氣息都無法穿透。因為那被同樣罪咎聯結在一起的人,邪惡的辯護也以心的頑梗把他們緊緊塞在一處,使他們藉相互的辯護為彼此的罪行遮護。因為當各人看見另一人受勸戒或糾正時,就為自己懼怕;因此他們同心抵擋斥責者的話語,因為各人都在別人身上蔽護自己。所以說得好:『這一片接連那一片,甚至一口氣也不能透入其間』(約伯記四十一章8節);因為在他們的罪孽中,當他們彼此以驕傲的辯護輪流庇護時,就絲毫不容聖潔勸勉的氣息進入他們裡面。
