Moralia in Job 392

Verse 18. If he swallow him up out of his place, it will deny him, and say: I know thee not. 85. The rejection of the hypocrite. The hypocrite is swallowed up out of his place, when, death intervening, he is separated from the favours of the present life. But the inward Judge denies him thus swallowed up, and declares that He knows him not, because Truth, justly rejecting the life of the dissembler, is ignorant of it, nor does He recognize the good deeds he did, because he did not bring these forth from an upright intention. Whence too, coming to judgment, He will say to the foolish virgins: Amen, I say to you, I know you not (Matt. 25:12). In whom, while He considers the corruption of the mind, He condemns even the incorruption of the flesh.

But would that their own perdition sufficed for hypocrites, and that their perverse pursuits did not ardently goad others on to the life of duplicity. For it is wont to be the property of each one, that whatever he himself has been, he wishes others also to be joined to him as such, shrinks from diversity of life, and stamps upon others as worthy of imitation that which he loves. Hence too, in the judgment of hypocrites, all simplicity is reckoned a crime. For they pass sentence on open minds, and call purity of heart dullness; and they turn aside from the path of simplicity all whom they desire to cling to them; and, as though folly had been driven out, they reckon that they have instructed those in whom they war down purity of mind, that is, the citadel of wisdom. But because the hypocrite is reproved not only for his own perversity, but also by the added perdition of his followers, after it is said that he is not acknowledged by the Judge, it is rightly at once subjoined:
